  • Turning Point: First Man in space

LinkRussian Soviet Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space. This was a huge turning point because this proved that humans can make it to space and back alive. This set off the chain of events in which we send more and more people into space
  • American Newscast of the event [P3]

Audio Clip LinkIn this audio clip from a Newscast describing what it was like for Yuri to be shot into space shows how event though he was a Soviet people where still fancinated by the idea that a man went into space. And this was during a time when people feared communists, but when it came to this event, everyone, no matter what side, was awed. This kind of awe will happen again when Neil Armstrong lands on the moon.

  • Cause of the Space Shuttle Challenger Incident

The cause and effect of the disater The cause of the explosion on the Challenger was an O-ring malfunction. O-rings are what sperates the rockets from the shuttle, due to the cold weather that day these rings did not function properly and caused the ship to explode 73 seconds later.

What this quote by her means is that during this time the president at this time wanted to put a civilian on the space shuttle in order for people to get more excited for the launch. So they led a campaing to find a qualified enough civilian to go into space. They chose Christa because she was a teacher, and like she said a lot of people can relate to as a person. • The effect of the Incident on History

This accident changed how NASA made shuttles. This is because NASA reportedly ignore the warnings of the O-rings not working properlly, and launched the shuttle anyways. Now NASA takes extra percautions to make sure that the crew memebers they send in those shuttles are as safe as they can be. This incident opened NASA's eyes that they need to be more careful and cautious when they send people up to space.
  • NASA Viewpoint/Primary

"As humanity's first reusable spacecraft, the space shuttle pushed the bounds of discovery ever farther, requiring not only advanced technologies but the tremendous effort of a vast workforce. "
What this quote means is that thanks to the space shuttle mankind's understanding of space has expanded thanks to it. So without this are understanding of space would be very little since the Space Shuttle allowed us to expand our knowledge.

  • Viewpoint on the Incident and the Space Shuttle program

Through this tradgey many people where afraid and angry towards NASA since they did ignore all of the warnings about the O-rings and launch Challenger anyways. But not many people oppose of the space shuttle program since many don't disagree that mankind shouldnt't explore space
