  • Yuri Gagarin orbits the Earth once and becomes the first man in space

    Orbiting the EarthYuri orbiting the earth shows the lead that the Soviet
    Union has agianst the US.

  • Gus Grissom is launched ona sub-orbital flight. His Liberty-Bell capsule is lost when it fills with water and sinks after splashdown.

    Slowly but shurelyThe launch and orbit showed how the US was catching
    up slowly to the Soviet Union.

  • Ranger 7 transmits the first close range images of the Moon.

    Getting images....The Ranger 7 transmitted images that helped lay ground
    work for the Apollo mission

  • Gus Grissom and John Young fly the first manned Gemini spacecraft.

    ManeuverableThis helped the US make the first maneuverable spacecraft.

  • Zond 5 is launched. It carried a biological payload (including two turtles) around the Moon and returned to Earth six days later.
