Sputnik 1 launch
The soviet union launched Sputnik 1 a research sattelite on october 4th 1957. When america found out they were mad and sad because they thought now for sure the Cold war is lost. This is how the space race is born. -
Dog in space
Laika was the first dog in space sent by the U.S.S.R although she did not make it back alive her legacy helped the idea for sending man into space she was sent into space before monkeys and this research helped them design space suits and space shuttles designed to come back to earth. -

Explorer 1 was the first U.S sattelite it helped us in the space race because a sattelite in space was the first then the U.S.S.R did to start the space race. This also helped with geography locating enemy bases and U.S weather. -

Nasa founded on october 1 1958 and this officaly started the space race. The main reasons it was founded is because it was out of national pride and we did not want the U.S.S.R winning the cold war. -

Sam a rhessus monkey was one monkey to go into space. The U.S.S.R were the first to send monkeys into space but the U.S took there time and got the monkeys they sent back from space still "alive". Se nding monkeys into space helped with researchon how it will help the idea of sending man in space. -

On April, 12, 1961 Yuri Gagarin became the first man orbit earth. This was extremely important to the U.S.S.R for they had the first man yo orbit earth it helped them in the space race. And also helped advance in technology that could get them to the moon. -

Alan shepard was the first U.S man to travel into space however he was not the first the U.S.S.R got to this first to but we still tried to catch up th defintly helped us with research and our nations pride. -
First U.S. man to orbit earth
John Glenn became the first american to orbit earth on Febuary, 20, 1962 in friendship7 a space shuttle. This was important to the space race so the U.S. would not get behind the U.S.S.R who had already orbited earth before this helped the making of future space shuttles and helped with research on weath and geography. -

Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space when a U.S.S.R engineer had the idea to put a woman in space for 2 great aspects of space it helped with rights for women to. -

Alexy Leonov was the first man to conduct a space walk he was with the U.S.S.R this helped with research and the space race to try and see if they could make it on the moon. -
First U.S. space walk
Ed White was the first american to space walk it was big for the U.S. because the U.S.S.R had already sapacewalked and we needed to catch up this also helped for the research of a moon landing craft. -
Gemini 7
Gemini 7 conducted the most experiments for any gemini flight including doubling length of yime in space and a new spacesuit. -
Apollo 8
This was important for learning about the moon and studying samples and maybe even thinking about going to other planets this helped finish the space race. -
First man on moon
Neil armstrong was the first man on the moon with his other crewmate Buzz aldrin this was big for the U.S in the space race we finnaly beat the U.S.S.R at one thing. The crew got moon rocks and moon samples which helped hugely in the study of the moon.
