At the end of World War Two the Soviet Union and the Unites States rose on top. They were the mot powerful therefore they were scared of each other. The United States decided to work on exploring space and therefore it bacame a race to get to space. -
Cold War
The United States and the Soviet Union were so afraid of each other they entered a cold war. They did not fight. They both wanted to get to space before the other so it became a race. -
Soviets Launch Satallite
On October 4 1957 the Soviets launched a satallite "Sputnik 1" into orbit. this frightened the United States because they thought that if they could do that then they might be able to launch miscles all the way to the United States. -
Soviet Union Launches Laika
The Soviet Union launches a space craft that holds a dog names Laika. This proves that living things can survive in space. -
U.S. launches the "Explorer 1"
The U.S. is very behind in the space race and finally gets their first satallite into orbit. -

The Unites States need to catch up in the race to space, so they decide to create a space program called "NASA". -
Soviet Union launches Luna 1
The Soviet Union lanches the Luna 1. The Luna 1 was the first manmade object to orbit the sun. -
John Glenn orbits the Earth 3 Times
John Glenn orbited the Earth 3 times. This proved that people could survive for a long period in space. -
Soviet Union Launches Luna 9
The Soviet Union launched the Luna 9. This was inportant because the Luna 9 was the first thing to softly land on the moon. It also explored the moon. -
U.S. and Soviet Union decide to work together
The Unites States and Soviet Union decide to work together on all space programs in the future. -
