This began the space race.This success shocked the world because it showed how we can launch satelites and nuclear rockets into space.The word Sputnik originally meant "fellow" traveler but has now become synonymous to satelite. The launching of Sputnik 1 created a whole new world of technology. -

Space Firsts The Soviet Union launches a female dog
into space on "Sputnik 2". Her name was
Laika and in Russia that means "Barker."
Her acheivment proves that living things such humans can survive in space.

Nova Timeline The U.S. Satellite, Explorer 1, was the first
satellitte launched into space for America.It also
orbited the earth and collected scientific data.This Satellite proved that the U.S. is catching up the Soviets in space exploration. -

Nova Timeline The Soivet Union flew over the moon with
Luna 3, capturing in photographs seventy percent of the
moons far side.Now the Soviets seemed to be winning the moon exploration race. If planning on sending man to the moon they were being secretive about it. -
Vostok 1
Nova Timeline Astronaut Yuri Gagarin from the Soviet Union
flew into orbit on Vostok 1. He became the
first man in space. Once again the Soviets
appeared to be beating the Space Race.

50 Years Of Space Flight In a speech President Jonh F. Kennedy
vowed that an American will land on the
moon and return safely before the end of
the decade. He said that we will go to the
moon not because it is easy but because it is hard.

Space Firsts John Glenn, an american, orbits the earth 3 times
in 4 hours and 56 minutes. He becomes
the oldest person to fly in space as part of the STS-95 space shuttle crew.

Nasa.gov L. Gorden Cooper, Jr was launched
as a pilot on his Faith 7 capsule. He
orbited the earth 22 times and was
in space longer than all the previous
five Mercury astronauts combined.
He also became the first american
astronaunt to sleep in orbit on his
mission. -
Vostok 6
Space Firsts The soviets sent Valentina Tereshkova in space
for three days alone, she was the first woman in space. Tereshkova was within
three miles of Veleri Bykovsky on Vostok
5 which is the closest two space crafts passed while in orbit. -
Luna 15
Mentalfloss.com Luna 15 was made by the Soviet Union Its mission was to land, collect samples of the moons surface and then return.The collected samples would have been the first robotic samples returned to Earth .Luna 15 ended up crashing and was not able to return the samples. Apollo 11 was orbiting in space at the same time as Luna 15. -
Apollo 11
Nasa.gov Apollo 11's primary objective was to complete a nation's goal made by American President John Kennedy to land on the moon and return to Earth safely. Apollo 11 launched July 16 carrying Neil Armstrong, Micheal Collings, and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin. A while after launch Armstrong took step on the moon and 20 min. later Aldrin followed him. They both spent 21 hours and 36 min. on the moon's surface.
