Explorer I Gets Launched by the US

Apollo 1
The AS-204 mission, later renamed Apollo 1, is struck by tragedy when a fire breaks out during a test and training exercise on the launch pad. All three crew members - Virgil Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee - are killed. The tragedy leads to a complete redesign of NASA's command modules, and it is nearly 21 months before the launch and completion of the next manned mission, Apollo 7 -
