Sputnik 2 was also launched by the Soviets, they launched a dog on this satellite. Laika was the first living creature to go into orbit. -

Explorer 1
The U.S. launched the second ever satellite named Explorer 1 on January 31, 1958. -
Vanguard 1
The U.S. sent another satellite to space called Vanguard 1 on March 17, 1958. -
First Man in Space
On April 12, 1961, the Soviet Union sent a cosmonaut to space and he was the first. His name was Yuri Gagarin. -
First American in Space
Alan Shepard was sent into space on May 5, 1961. He was not in orbit, though. -
First American in Orbit
John Glenn was the first American in orbit in space in February of 1962. -
Man on the Moon
On July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong was the first man on the moon. Buzz Aldrin was the second. They traveled on the Apollo 11. -
Salyut 1
The Soviets launched the first space station, Salyut 1. Space Stations are where astronauts can live in space for a long time in a safe environment filled with oxygen. -
Apollo 17
Apollo 17 landed on December 11, 1972. This event is the most recent landing on the moon for the U.S. No other country has since put someone on the moon. -
Skylab
Skylab was the first space station established by the United States of America. -

in 1979, Skylab, the first space station sent by the U.S., falls back down to Earth's atmosphere, and it was sooner than expected. -
Salyut 7
Salyut 7 was the last space station that the Soviets launched. -
Mir
Mir was a space station that was designed by the United States and Russia. It went into orbit on February 20, 1986. Mir was launched in different pieces and it was the continued time in space. Mir left orbit and came back to earth in 2001. The space station then landed in the Pacific Ocean. -
The Hubble Space Telescope
The Hubble was the first telescope into space; it has made some of the most incredible discoveries of space ever. The Hubble was put into orbit in 1990. -
The Pathfinder Discovering Mars
The Pathfinder was a rover that discovered Mars, and it studied Mars for about three months. -
International Space Station Launch
The Internation Space Station (ISS) is a space station built by many different countries all over the world. It is still up in space for people to live in, but unfortunately is falling apart. It was launched in the year 2000. -
Columbia Disaster
On January 16, 2003, on the launch of the space shuttle Columbia a small amount of insulation. Then the insulation hit the wing. -
Spirit Is Lost
Spirit was a rover that would discover Mars, and it would send data to earth until January of 2010.
