Sputnik 1 was the 1st arrtificial satelite sent into space by the USSR, the United States worried the Soviets could have a nuclear missle that could reach the U.S. This led to the beggining of the space race.

The USSR launched Laika the space dog into outer space aboard Sputnik 2. This was very important because it showed how advanced in the space race the Soviets were because they had sent the first living animal into space safely. Alan Shepard was launched into space by the U.S. He did not orbit the earth but this was still a huge accomplishement for the U.S because they had now succesfully sent a human into space and start studying space further.

Luna 10 is the first satelite to orbit the moon.
Luna 10 was a satelite launched into space by the USSR and it orbited the moon. Because the USSR already had a satelite orbiting the moon it showed the U.S that the soviets are interested in exploring the moon and could possibly be the first humans on the moon.

2 american astronauts walked on the moon after traveling to space in the Apollo 11 spacecraft. This was really big news because it ment that the U.S had won the space race by being the first humans on the moon and beat the Soviets.
