    As my mother's maiden name is Kim, she was born as Soyoung Kim. She was born in a local hospital in her birth and home city of Seoul, South Korea. She was the second-born child since my mom has an older brother. Apparently my grandmother was disappointed because she wanted another boy, rather than a female.

    As Korean public schools start on March 1st, the election day for the student government takes place around two weeks after the beginning of school. As my mom was very ambitious, she ran for vice-president of her grade. She wanted to run for president, but back in this time period, South Korea was, or sometimes still is, a society that views men as the ones who should have the power. Therefore, only a male could be voted as president, so my mom ended up becoming vice-president instead.

    The Gwangju Massacre was a series of revolts that took place during the time span from May 18th to 27, 1980. Chun Doo-hwan's dictatorship over South Korea was the cause of the uprisings for control over the city of Seoul. However, it is known as a massacre because of the revolting citizens were crushed by the South Korean army, resulting in about 165 deaths.
