African slaves were brought to Virginia
African people were brought to America to be slaves. The South mostly used the slaves for plantations and house chores. The North and South both used slavery, but slavery in the North died out over time due to the fact of the economy they had. The South was happy because they had more slaves to work for them. The South is more at fault because the plantation owners still wanted slaves to work on plantations and do their chores. -
Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence originally had a paragraph about slavery written by Thomas Jefferson. He believed that slavery was wrong and should not be in America. When the south heard about this decision they were going to secede if they did not remove the paragraph. The Southern States did not like this because they used slaves to do every day things in their houses and on their land. It was the Northern States fault because they influenced his decision to try and get rid of slavery. -
Constitutional Convention
The Constitutional Convention was a convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This convention was held so the states would have laws to follow. The 3/5 compromise was made at this convention. It let slaves count as 3/5 of a person. in the senate the bigger the population was the more representation they had so the South liked the Compromise. It was both of the region's fault because they both wanted a set of laws to follow and a government. -
Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise was when the government decided that Missouri would become a slave state. Since the system then became unbalanced with slave states and free states, the Northern States got angry that they had less representation so the government decided to make Maine a free state. The South was happy about this Compromise because they got another slave state. It was the North's fault because they needed a balanced system. -
Compromise of 1850
The Compromise of 1850 was when 5 separate bills were passed by congress. There was a 4-year political confrontation between slave states and free states about the territories from the Mexican-American war. This caused tension because the North wanted them to be free states but the South wanted them to be slave states. The South was happy about this because the territory became slave states. The South was more at fault because they still used slaves to do their work labor. -
The South Secedes from America
This event was when the Southern States decided to secede the union. South Carolina was the first state to secede, then 6 other states followed after that and started The Confederate States. The South was happy because they successfully seceded from America and could now form a new government and keep slavery and their ways of life. It was the Southern States fault because they chose to secede from America and form the Confederacy. -
Bleeding Kansas
The Bleeding Kansas was when people from both regions went to Kansas to influence the vote on whether or not Kansas would become a slave state or a free state. This event caused tension because the South wanted Kansas to become a slave state but the North did not. Many fights in Kansas broke out due to the different opinions about slavery. The South liked this because they had a chance to get another slave state. It was both regions fault because they both came to Kansas to influence the vote. -
Firing on Fort Sumter
The firing of Fort Sumter was when Southern Commander's troops shot at Fort Sumter. The Northern states eventually surrendered and the south claimed victory. This caused tension between the North and the South because the Southern states shot first which caused the Civil War to start and no one died. The South was happy because they got what they wanted. It was the South's fault because they decided to shoot at Fort Sumter and start the Civil war.
