First Europeans in South Africa
The first Europeans or white settlers came to South Africa in 1652. This is what begins the Apartheid. -

South Africa became two colonies on May 31st, 1910. -
Apartheid Starts
Apartheid begins in South Africa during the general election in 1948. Apartheid is when people who look different from others have to be seperated. -
No Mixed Marriages
No more mixed marriages were allowed for people of a different race. Only 75 mixed marriages had been recorded before that law was made. -

This law is where people in South Africa have to be classified in a group due to their racial looks. -
African Sent Back to Native Lands
This law was passed so all Africans had to live in their native home lands. -
Pass Books
A law was passed that every South African citizen must carry a pass book that has their race and group or they would be arrested. -
Jailed
Nelson Mandela was jailed for life because he stood up for what he believed in. -
Student Uprising
High-school students in Soweto started to protest for a better education for the darker skinned students. The police responed to it by shooting people and using teargas. -
Steve Biko
Steve Biko was arrested and tortured and killed for standing up againest Apartheid. When this happened it made the people of Africa mad and they wanted to stop Apartheid even more. -
Apartheid Ends
Apartheid finally ends when president F. W. de Klerk. By 1991 ALL laws for Apartheid were gone. -
Mandela Released From Prison
Nelson Mandela is released from a life sentence in prison. -
Mandela wins Nobel Peace Prize
Nelson Mandela won the Nobel Peace Prize for F. W. de Klerk and Mandela's work in ending arpartheid in South Africa. -
Mandela is Elected
Nelson Mandela is elected president of South Africa. -
Nelson Mandela's Death
Nelson Mandela lived to be 95. He was South Africa's first black president. Mandela was in prision for 27 years because he stood up for what he believed in. He changed South Africa and the people there.
