Before I entered Kindergarten, my parents were always busy with work, so they never really had the chance to sit down and read with me. On the other hand, my older sister was always excited to read to me, so every day we would sit together and she would read to me any picture book she could find. She would also help me sound out letters and (sometimes) words.

Once I was officially enrolled in school, I began learning how to read in English and Spanish during Kindergarten since I went to a school that had a bilingual education. My grandma always got excited when I began to read to her in Spanish.

Since my love for books continued to grow, I began to read less picture books and began reading more small short chapter books, like Junie B. Jones books. My older sister got excited and would recommend me her favorite books when she was my age.

Starting 3rd grade, reading became a favorite hobby of mine and I began to finish books that were about 300 pages long in a day, like Diary of a Wimpy Kid.

Since I was tested and was put at a high school reading level by the time I was in 5th grade, I was given the chance to read everything they had to offer in the school's library. With that being said, I was constantly in the library picking out new books to read. Photo by Gaelle Marcel on Unsplash

Since I moved in 3rd grade, I no longer had a bilingual education, but I did still read in Spanish. Nonetheless, I got excited seeing as my 5th grade class was going to read a book that had a Mexican main character which was something I rarely stumbled upon when reading other books.

My oldest sister was obsessed with Harry Potter and since my school library had the books, I began to read them. It was at this time that I truly fell in love with reading and became known as a bookworm.

In my second semester of 6th grade, we began to learn about Edgar Allan Poe and read some of his works. I really enjoyed reading some of his works, but definitely found myself losing that drive I once had to read books.

Second semester of 9th grade rolled around, I officially lost all motivation to read anything. Not only that, but reading Romeo and Juliet felt like time was passing by slowly in class and I would find myself bored with the lesson plans revolving around Shakespeare.

Thanks to a lot of my college professors, I began to pick up reading as a hobby again. While some had weekly readings, I found that they would use contemporary authors/writers and found myself more engaged in classes, as well as curious. Pictured is Sarah Gerkensmeyer.

I was gifted this book for my birthday and it definitely helped me begin to read for enjoyment again. It reminded me of the love I had for reading and it also allowed me to discover new authors.
