Fort Laramie Treaty
The government came up with the Fort Laramie treaty and signed it in 1851, then in 1858 gold was discovered. The government forced the Indians to give up land around Pikes Peak. They didnt want to accept the agreement and attacked the white settlers. This affected a lot of people later on because the Indians didnt want to give the miners their land and that caused dispute between them. This also drew people apart and they didnt neccesarily agree or like each other. -

imageIn 1859 two people hit gold in Nevada. Then Henry Comstock took over the land and called it "his", it was filled with a lot of gold and silver. They complained about the blue sand that was mixed in with the gold because it clogged the devises used to seperated the gold so it was hard for them to get it. Then they took the blue stuff to an expert and found out that it was actually filled with siver! Other miners moved into other places in the west. Some found valubles in other states also. -

The Cattle Kingdom
imageThe cattle kindom began when the demand for cattle increased after the civil war. Then cow towns came up along the rail road lines. The people let there cattle go anywhere, they just marked them with their brand so they knew whose cattle it was. The cattle kingdom began to end because the farmers started to fence there areas with barbed wire which had been invented. Then the barbed wire kept the cattle from running over fences and ruining plowed fields. -
Homestead Act
The Homestead Act gave people 160 acres of land for $12 if they could farm it for 5 years. This event was a problem though because many people couldn't farm it for 5 years because of money or because of weather or other issues. This led the government and economy down because many people failed and went into debt. This effected the people later on because they needed to recover from this. The people struggled with many issues and only about half of them made it for 5 years. -

The Construction of the Transcontinental Railroad
imageBuilding the railroad was a tough job. The workers faced many challenges likeexplosions, living alone, and other dangerous things. Many workers were chinese and they came to help the railroad but were expected to die and many of them did in explosions. In the end though, the railroad allowed easy oppertunity to transport goods and provided easier transportation to the west which led to towns and growth in the west. The railroad also had some negative affects but in the end helped. -
Barbed Wire Invention
The farmers began fencing their fields with barbed wire which kept the animals out and kept the animals and cattle from trampling over their plowed fields. This led to it being easier to farm and produce crops. This helped the farmers make more money because they had more crops to sell. This didn't help the cattle drives though because it cut off the trails which ended the cattle kingdom. Then this all led to other events and problems in the future. -
Battle of Little Bighorn
Custer attacked LIttle Bighorn Valley but him and all his men died from the battle. Then the government and congress didn't give the Indians food until they agreed to the governments demands. The Indians gave up so they wouldn't starve. This hurt everyone because it just brought everyone apart and made the Indians not like us and we didn't like the Indians. This event made the Indians give up the land that they wanted in the Fort Laramine Treaty. -

Oklahoma land rush
The Oklahoma land rush was when the government gave away about 3 million acres. Although, when the gun shot and people raced to get the land 'sooners' already snuck in and took some of the land which caused violence and fights. This event impacted us because violence and fighting is never good for a community. I think this event tore us apart and seperated us and didnt help the union come together. When people know sooners they become hateful and then they turn against other inocent people. -
