Americans Not Ready For War

Britin Blockades American Ports
- Americans were confident that they would win the war

- British blockaded the American coast, 135 warships blocked the coast
- By the end of the war all American ports were closed
- The USS Constitution defeated the British warships in a feirce battle

- William Hull moved American troops from Detroit to Canada
- Canada had very few and untained troops
- The Canadians were lead by General Isaac Brock, a very clever and skillful leader
- The Americans attcked 3-4 times
- Canadians won every time, sending the Americans to retreat

USS Constition Scores a Victory
- Fierce battle against the British, the USS Constitution won
- "Old Ironsides"
- It was a majore sea battle
- The US was unprepared for war
- Jefferson's cuts made it harder to fight with under 7,000 men

Battle Of Lake Erie
- Americans wanted control of Lake Erie
- Captin Oliver Hazard Perry designed and built his own ships
- The British battered Perry's own ship
- Perry took his flag down and went to another American Ship
- After he got to the ship he raised his flag again and fought more
- Americans won, Perry said " We have met the enemy and they are ours"

- British and Tecumseh retreated from Detroit into Canada
- Native Americans and the British lost contol of Lake Erie *America won and won control of Lake Erie
- Tecumseh died in the war fighting
- The Indian confederation fell apart without Tecumseh

Attack on Baltimore
*First objective was Fort Mchenry
*September 13, 1814 the British war ships bombareded the fort
*Fransis Scottt Key watched the attack
* At dawn the American flag was still hanging outside the fort
* Fransis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner as a poem and when it was popular in 1931 then someone put it to music and America adopted it as the national anthem -

*Fransis Scott Key witnessed the battle and wrote a poem
* The poem was eventually put to music

Hartford Convention
- Critics of President Madison spoke out more strongly
- New Englanders disliked the war, blockade damage north east trade
- New England wanted to withdraw from the US
- The war ended quickly
- The war was called the "Second War Of Independence"

Treaty of Ghent
The Traty of Ghent was signed on December 24th of 1814
* Nothing was settled but things were adjusted
* British agreed to restore prewar conditions
* Nothing about impressment or neutrality, issues faded after Napoleonic wars with Europe
* Americans and the British thought the war of 1812 was a mistake
* We had new pride in our country, our Republican leader remarked "the people are now more American. They feel and act more as a nation -
Battle Of New Orleans
*On January 8th of 1815 the British attacked New Orleans
*Many people from New Orleans joined the army to fight for there state
* They dug trenches to protect themselves
*When the British attacked over 2,000 British men died
* Only 7 Americans died
*Signed a treaty and Andrew Jackson was a hero
