    Womens Suffrage

    After years of work by women including Elizabeth Stanton and Lucretia Mott the 19th amendment was finally passed. Groups includiong the National American Woman Suffrage Association went from state to state trying to get a vote and held mass meetings and protests to get their point across.
  • Race Riots

    Race Riots
    One of the major race riots during the progressive era was the Chicago race riot of 1919 which started what we call the Red Summer which included 25 riots. These riots were due to the great migration which was a migration of African Americans to the North to find jobs. When they got there however they were not welcomed creating tension and riots.

    Prohibition

    Rural protestants and social prggressives in the Democratic and Republican parties helped promote a prohibition and created the Anti-Saloon League which led to the implementation of the 18th Amendment. This prohibition led to organized crime and death and was not followed by many making it fail. One major figure in the Prohibition Era was Al Capone as he made tons of money selling alcohol illegally.

    Radio and Journalism
    The creation of mass circulated magazines and the radio were main components in creating a national culture. The radio began broadcasting national events including presedential elections during the 1920s. News in crime, sports, comics and scandals were now available to anyone and it could spread in a flash.

    Jazz Movement

    Jazz began in New Orleans by African Americans and spread like wild fire because of its creative excitement and sensual character. People of all dissent and culture loved it as it even spread to Europe. Jazz was very important to the progressive era because of how it boosted the recording industry and brought the country closer together.

    Sports

    Before the 1920s sports had been amateur events but then it swithched to professional where there was a chance to make alot of money. This money led to a huge promotion of sports and its expansion. Professional sports also lead to an increase in youth and college sports.

    The Flappers

    The Flappers were young single women that lived in northern cities. After womens suffarage was finally gained and prohibition started these women in Northern cities that held stable jobs wanted to have more fun and would go out at night into speakeasies and clubs. These women were more sexually active than ever experienced before. One well known Flapper of this age was Clara Bow she was a major influence in showing girls the Flapper life.

    Automobile

    The Automobile is still a huge part of society today and of course helped spread culture in the progressive era. After Tom Ford created mass made automobiles people were now able to live farther from their work in cities creating suburbs. Automobiles also helped spread culture because it again helped the nation become more connected.

    Talkies
    Talkies were created after a new technology allowing singing and talking in a film to occur. Silent films a completly been raplaced almost instantly with the new talkies. Movie theater owners bagan to make loads of profit and theaters everywhere began to be upgraded.
  • Hipsters

    Hipsters
    Hipsters evolved in the forties as they were fans of Jazz in the 20s and also Bebop. These hipsters enjoyed dressing different smoking and being very lenient of sexual activity. Hipsters showed a way of African Americans transending to Whites which had never happened before. Hipsters were and are so important because there still are signs of it today.
