Lewis Terman revised the Binet-Simon intelligence test at Stanford and adapted it for testing children. His later studies set the stage for identifying gifted students. -
Gifted Education Born
Gifted Education is pioneered by Leta Stetter Hollingworth. Hollingsworth used Terman' s test, but she had a specific interest in furthering the education of bright students rather than study them. -
Sputnik Launched
The Soviet Union launches Sputnik which prompts the United States to reassess the quality of education in American schools. The need for students who excelled in technology, math, and science became crucial to compete internationally. -
Gifted Defined
The Marland Report encourages schools to define gifted in a broader sense. The federal definition goes beyond academic and intellectual talent. The arts are included in the definiton ultimately leading to different conceptions of giftedness, program models and their efficacy. -
Gifted Act
The Jacob Javits Gifted and Talented Students Education Act passes congress. The Javits program's intention was to improve gifted education awareness in underserved populations. Although the program was defunded in 2011, it may have helped to dispell the myth that gifted programs are elitist. -
NAGC Standards Published
The National Association for Gifted Children published program standards for Pre-K through grade 12. The focus and direction that standards provide help to guide essential factors that have an impact on the composition of a school or classroom. Identification, assessment, and program planning need to be in synch and supported to be effective.
