    The Trogan war was caused because the wife of King Menelaus, Helen, was taken by Paris. This caused much strife between the people of Troy and the Greeks, because Greece ordered an army upon Troy to in order to rescue Helen. This war lasted lasted for ten years! From 1194 to 1184 BC.

    Develoment of the first Greek alphabet
    From 850 to 700 BC the making of the Greek alphabet occured. The Greeks adapted the Phonecian writing system to fit to the needs of their own language. Therefore developing a fully phonetic writing system that could represent both consonants and vowels. Greece still uses this alphabet today.

    The very first Olympic Games began in 776 BC, and were held in Ancient Greece. It consisted of a series of athletic events, in which men competed to see who was the best at a particular sport. The Olympics are still hosted today, and have become a tradition for many countires.

    Homer Writes the Iliad and the Odyssey
    Written in 750 BC the famour poet Homer, wrote the Iliad and the Odessey. The Iliad is a poem about the battle of Troy, which began when the wife of the Greek King Menelaus, Helen, was kidnapped by Paris. Menelaus was determined to rescue his wife so he rallied Greek forces to attack troy and regain Helen off of Paris. The writing or the Iliad and the Odyssey allowed archeologists to gain histroical evidence about Ancient Greece.

    Athens become a Democracy
    In 505 BC Athens became the first city in the world to be ruled by the people, more commonly known as democracy. This was introuduced by the Athenian leader Cleisthenes. He called this system Demokratia. There are now 16 official countries ruled by democracy.

    The Peloponnesian Wars began because of distrust between Sparta and Athens. Both city-states fought several viscious wars between 431 and 404 BC. Ultimately resulting in the defeat of Athens.

    Plato founds the Academy
    In 380 BC Plato founded the Acadamy in which men could go and study philosophy and science in order to become better statesmen. Plato taught one of the greatest philosophers ever, Aristotle who has transformed our world because of his seeminhly unlimited knowledge. Aristotle then when on to teach Alexander the Great.

    Alexander the Great expands Greece
    The reign of Alexander the Great was one of the most significant events in the history of Ancient Greece. In the time frame of 333 to 323 BC he greatly expanded Greece's territory from the mainland of Greece all the way to present day Afghanistan. Alexander the Great died at the young age of 32.

    Rome conquered greece for 114 years! Between 200 and 86 BC. Rome became a big part of Greece's culture, religion, philosphy and government.
  • Persian Wars

    Persian Wars
    The Persian War was a significant battle that took place from 499 to 493 BC. The two city-states of Sparta and Athens allied together to fight for thier independence from Persian rule. Ten years later Greek city - states inculding Athens and Sparta, grouped togther to fight the Persian army of King Xerxes and eventually the city-states won.
