    In Nov.26, 1990, the Shanghai Stock Exchange (SSE) was founded and a month later it started to operate. Shanghai was the first city in China to develop securities business. It is governed by the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC). Similar to other exchanges, its purpose is to provide investors a transparent, safe, open, and efficient marketplace. It also provides a place for corporations to raise capital and improve their operation mechanism.

    The index was introduced on July 15, 1991. SSE’s first stock index is the SSE Composite Index. This market index tracks all listed stocks (both A shares and B shares) at Shanghai Stock Exchange. 872 stocks are included. It reflects the price movements of companies from a wide range of industries. It is considered as an indicator of the overall health of the Chinese economy. This index is an authoritative statistical index which is widely followed in China.
