Both Japan and Russia wanted to enlarge the power and influence in the countries that China controlled.The Russo-Japanese War was one of the cause of the Russian Revolution of 1905. Russia was humiliated after losing this war. The Treaty of Portsmouth required Russia to remove troops from Manchuria while allowing the Japanese to hold the Liaodong peninsula and Korea. As a result of all of this the Czar was forced to liberalize his government.

    World War I began when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Soon after Russia, Germany, France, and Great Britian were involved. The Bolshevik Revolution alerted Russia to pull out of the war. After this war, the Russian Empire collapsed. They also had to accept the terms of the Central Powers.

    In this war the general goal of the Germans was to gain more land for Germany. The germans also wanted to exterminate all of the "racially inferior" people in Russia. After this war, Russia controlled parts of Germany and started to take over some countries in eastern Europe and install a communist government.

    The cold war caused European nations, the United States, and Canada to form a new military defense alliance (NATO). This meant that Soviets could not touch any of the NATO members without being attacked by their whole alliance. The Soviets then created their own military alliance with the eastern European nations (Warsaw Pact) because of this.

    This war began because both countries accused eachother of military buildup between Abkhazia and South Ossetia. After this war was over Abkhazia and South Ossetia were reconized as independent republics. Victory went to Russia, South Ossetia, and Abkhazia. Georgia also lost control over parts of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.
