    In 1819 Missouri wanted to enter the Union as a slave state. This would upset the balance of power in Congress. Tensions over slavery increased. A compromised was reached that Missouri would enter a slave state and no slave state could be made in the future in the remaining Louisianna Territory above the 36 30 line. Maine would enter as a free state
