    Cotton Gin
    The cotton gin was a machine that separated cotton from its seeds. It related to sectionalism because at the time slavery was largely debated on and disagreed on.
  • Embargo Act 1807

    The Embargo Act was an embargo placed on Great Britain and France by the United States. It related to sectionalism because it put a ban on who some business owners could trade with.
  • Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise made Missouri a slave state and Maine a free state. It related to sectionalism because it was trying to keep the balance of power in congress of the slave states and the free states.
  • Tariff of Abominations

    The Tariff of Abominations was a tariff designed to protect the industry in northern United States. It relates to sectionalism because it is only protecting the northern part of industry not any in the south even though it is less common in the south.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 defused the four year political disagreement between slave and free states regarding the territory of the Mexican- American War. It related to sectionalism because it regarded to the disagreement of slave states and free states.
  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    A book about life as a slave. It relates to sectionalism because it showed how slaves were treated and how they were ignored for so long.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    The Kansas Nebraska Act served to repeal the Missouri act, which prohibited slavery in the north. It related to sectionalism because it gave the people a vote in wether they want to have slavery or not in their borders.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Bleeding Kansas was a series of violent protests between pro-slavery and anti-slavery activists. It relates to sectionalism because people were finally trying to make their state free of slaves.
  • Dred Scott Case

    The Dred Scott Case was a controversial ruling made by the Supreme Court shortly before the civil war. It related to sectionalism because a slave sought to be declared a free man based on that he lived in a free territory for awhile.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John Brown's Raid was the start of a slave rebellion in the south. It relates to sectionalism because John Brown, his men, and the local slaves were the outsiders trying to make it right for the slaves.
  • Election of 1860

    The election where the democrats split and the republican Abraham Lincoln won the election. It relates to sectionalism because the democratic party split into two sections.
  • South Carolina secedes from the Union

    South Carolina became the first slave state in the south to secede from the United States. It relates to sectionalism because South Carolina was the only state in the south to secede.
