Cotton Gin
The cotton gin was made by Eli Whitney. The machine was made during the Industrial Revoluntion era and it removed cotton from its seeds. This was important because it made the cotton buisness boom in the south. However, it made an increased in the owning of slaves to pick the cotton. Which lead to conflict about continuing slavery. -
The Embargo Act
The Emabargo Act included Thomas Jefferson and the congress.. The act was to punish Britian and France for intefering with the American Trade while the European powers were at war with one another. Thomas Jefferson passed the law to prevent any war with the US and britian. But, it later lead to the War of 1812. -
Missouri Compromise
The missouri Compromise consisted of the US senate and House of Representatives. It was to keep balance between the free and slave holding states. The north wanted to be free and the south still wanted slaves. The south feared that the north will overpower them. -
Tariff of Abominations
The tariff sought to protect northern adn western products. Tax on foriegn goods raised the souths living and cut into New Englands profits, President John Quincy Adams approved the bill on May 13,1828. -
Mexican-American War
Mexico vs USA fought on foreign soil. U,S president James K. Polk believed they had a manifest destiny to spread across the continent of the Pacific Ocean. Mexico lost about 1/3 of their territory. -
Wilmot Proviso
The purpose of the the Wilmot Proviso was to say that none of the territoy in the Mexican War should be open to slavery and to voice the anti-slavery views of the north because the cabinent of James Polk was dominating pro-slavery. -
The compromise of 1850
The compromise of 1850 was sought by Henry Clay and it admitted California as a free state and determined if states are going to be slave states by popular soverignty and ending slave trade in Washignton, DC. -
Uncles Tom Cabinent
The novel expressed the dehumanizing life as a slave, and mistreatment that was tooken on everyday. It was refered during abolionist movements and the South felt attacked by the north. It also created sectional tentions and later on erupted into civil war. -
Bleeding Kansas
During the bleeding kansas, the kansas territory was a site of voilence of whether or not to be a free or slave state. Kansas would be the battlegrounf of the north and south disagreements. They fought with hatred, anger and voilence during the bleeding kansas. -
Kansas-Nebreska Act
The kansas-nebreska act was the most significant event leading to the Civil War. It was an act that tried to organize territories of nebreska and kansas by opening new lands for settlement and repealed the Missouri Compromise. -
Dred Scott Case
The dred scott case was a case that involved a slave named dred scott who was resided in a free state and was not given freedom. They believed that all African Americans was not given a right to become a citizen. This case later contributed to the election of Abraham Lincoln. -
House Divided Speech
Lincolns house divided speech was given at the Illnois Republican convention in Springfield. He believed that the supreme court decision on the dred scott case was a democratic conspiracy that lead to the legalization in all states. -
Lincoln-Douglous Debate
The Lincoln douglas debate was lincoln vs stephen douglas for a seat in the senate. The debates were held at 7 different locations where douglous advocated popular soveriegnty and that the founding fathers did not intend indpendence for blacks. While, Abraham did believe that blacks was entitled rights. -
John Browns Raid
John led a small army of 18 men into Harpes Henry, Virgina. He would then instigate a major slave rebellion in the south. Southern politicans blamed the republican and falsely claimed Abraham Lincoln of supporting browns intentions of destroying their properties and lifes. -
Election of 1860
The election of 1860 was an outbreak of the american civil war. Democrats met in Charleston, SC to select their canidate for president. Northern democrats thought stephen douglas sould represent them. But, southern democrats nominated vice president John C Breckenridge because they thought douglas would choose not to have slavery. -
South Carolina secedes from Union
South Carolina was the first to secede from the union because they believed that the instution of slavery was in danger. They did not believe that the federal goverment had their best intrest in mind. Therfore, they seceded from the union and became a confederacy.
