  • The Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise
    Effort by US senate and House of Reps to maintain a balance of power between the “slave holding” states and free states. Affected US because it divided the North from the South due to not coming to an agreement on slavery.
  • Nat Turners Rebellion

    Nat Turners Rebellion
    A slave named Nat Turner led an uprising that spreaded through several plantations in southern Virginia. Turner and approximately seventy cohorts killed around sixty white people. The deployment of militia infantry and artillery suppressed the rebellion after two days of terror. Fifty-five slaves, including Turner, were tried and executed for their role in the outbreak. Affected US because slaves fought due to the neglection of their civil rights.

    Annexation of Texas & California
    Annexation of Texas (Polk); negotiated Oregon treaty; result of Mexican-American war; gained eight states. Led to the Civil War because of the fighting over who gets what territory and land.
  • Wilmot Provido

    Wilmot Provido
    Propose American law banning slavery; territory that was gained in Mexican-American War; turned down by South. Affected US because it inspired politicians to take on slavery.
  • Harriet Tubman & The Underground Railroad

    Harriet Tubman & The Underground Railroad
    Abolitionist were speaking to end slavery; Tubman put in action; helped 300 slaves escape; agent of rail road (safe house); helped reach Canada (safe haven). Affected US because he was trying to make change in slavery & tried to do as much as he can to free as many as he could.

    Compromise of 1850
    Henry clay issued a bill that would admit California as a free state, organized NM and Utah territories, Legislation, end slave trade. Affected US because land was given out as well as California being added to be a free state.

    Passed by US congress; was part of the Compromise of 1850 between southern slave-holding interest & Northern free soilers. (Bloodhouse Law). Affected US because it created sectionalism between the North and the South.

    Civil war fought between pro slavery and anti- slavery advocates for control of then new territory of Kansas. Affected US because of tension rising between the two groups.
  • Kansas - Nebraska Act

    Kansas - Nebraska Act
    Allowed people in the territory of Kansas & Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their boarders. Affected the US because it gave all people a say in how they wanted their state to be ran.
  • Popular Sovereignty In Territories

    The violent struggle that followed for control of the Kansas territory, illustrated the failure of popular sovereignty as a possible grand agreement between pro-slavery and anti-slavery actions. Affected the US because there were conflicts between people and the different tribes which made it hard to untie to start growing.
  • Election of Abraham Lincoln

    Election of Abraham Lincoln
    Ran against John C. Beckinridge, John Bell, & Stephen Douglas. 16th president over divided democratic party. Lincoln was a lawyer & representative of Whig Party. Affected the US because social and political changes came within the new president, Lincoln.
