Apartheid in South Africa
This was the main duration of Apartheid -
Black Land Act No 27
This act was the first to establish specific reservations for Native Africans to live on. This was the initial basis for what would later evolve into the complex system of Bantustans and separate governments that was a cornerstone of Grand Apartheid. -
Native (Black) Urban Areas Act No 21
This act controlled the movements of blacks in the areas that were designated as cities. It also put local governments in charge of keeping blacks in the right areas. This was significant because it was a big early step towards controlling the movements of blacks. -
Industrial Conciliation Act No 11
This act established job reservation, and heavily restricted the labor rights of blacks to unionize. This made working conditions much worse for blacks, especially in comparison to those of whites. -
Immorality Act and Amendment to Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act
This act banned sexual relations between people of different races. This was an early attempt of the Apartheid government to control people's personal lives. This was also later extended as an amendment to the Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act to criminalize mixed race affairs. -
Prohibition of Mixed Marriages Act
This act prohibited any marriages between people categorized as different races, and abolished all marriages that were between people of different races. This was an attempt by the Apartheid government to control people's personal lives and choices to "keep bloodlines pure." -
Population Registration Act
The government began tracking races and family histories in order to prevent mixing of bloodlines and assign people into categories. This was a way in which they determined how much to discriminate against different types of people, and divide a diverse population into groups based on race. -
Group Areas Act
This formally established separate areas of cities, specifically the nicer areas, for whites only, and restricted the movements of all others in those areas. It was also one of the acts that led to the establishment of passes that blacks had to carry with them. -
Black Building Workers Act No 27
This restricted the types of jobs that blacks could have, reserving skilled labor jobs for whites. This made it even more difficult for blacks to get good jobs and make any decent money -
Black (Native) Laws Amendment Act No 54
This law formally established the system of Pass Laws. Blacks were forced to constantly carry passes and use them to enter different areas of the city, and these passes were used by the government to track their movements. This was how the Apartheid government planned to establish complete control over the black population -
Reservation of Separate Amenities Act
This act formally established separate public facilities for people of different races. This was the height of Petty Apartheid, as it was simply pure discrimination and racism without any purpose or intent.
