First human in space
Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was the first human in space. He was born on the 9th of March 1934. He died on the 27th of March 1968. He was killed with another pilot named Vladimir Seryogin. They died while they were on a routine training flight, the cause was a crash. -
President Kennedy challenges the country
President Kennedy was the 35 U.S president. President Kennedy challenged the country to put a man on the moon by the end of the decade. His greatest accomplishment is that he gave his famous civil rights speech to the Americans to recognise their civil rights and make it a moral cause. -

First man to walk into space
While on his spacecraft, cosmonaut Alexi Leonov became the first man to walk in space. He floated for 12 minutes and 9 seconds. Leonov died on 11th of October 2019 after a long illness in Moscow. He was 85 and the last living member of the five cosmonauts in the Voskhod programme. -
Three astronauts are killed
Astronauts Gus Grissom, Ed White and Roger Chaffee were killed in an accidental fire in a command module on the launch pad. Ed White was the first American to walk on space. The Apollo series of missions would take American astronauts to the surface of the moon. -
First two men on the Moon
Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin became the first men on the moon.
They were both on the moon for 21 hours and 36 minutes. They were outside the lunar module and spent two hours taking photos and collected materials to be tested back on Earth. -

Astronaut Bruce McCandless ll was the first man to take an untethered space walk. He completely floated away from the safety of the space shuttle with nothing, but used his manning unit to keep him alive. He was the first person to do it in history. -

Eileen Collins became the first female Shuttle pilot. She had a deep love to flying and loved airplanes since she was a kid. At the age of 19, she saved money from part time jobs to do flying lessons. -

John Glenn born 18th July 1921 was the oldest man in space. Glenn's mission was delayed numerous times, leading to concern and anxiety. -
First tourist in space
American Dennis Tito became the first tourist in space after paying the Russian space program $20,000,000. He parachuted on Earth on May 26 2001 and then landed on the steps of Kazakhstan. -

President Bush proposed a new space program that would send humans back to the moon by 2015 and establish a base to Mars and beyond. He was served as the 46 governor of Texas from 1995 - 2000. -
First teacher in space
A Space Shuttle Endeavor and a crew of seven blasted off with teacher astronaut Barbara Morgan. Morgan was the first teacher in space since the Challenger disaster in 1986. She then trained as a Mission Specialist, and flew on
STS-118 in August 2007.
