School Nutrition Program Timeline

  • First Major Event

President Harry S. Truman enacts the School Nutrition act, as he wanted children to be able to eat nutritious meals so that they could become productive adults. This act was officially invoked as of 1966.
  • Second Major Event

The Milk Program was first created in 1942 but wasn't officially added to the School Nutrition Program until 1960. This act was important because students were now given a low-cost pint of milk which is a good way of getting calcium, so now their bones would be stronger.
  • Third Major Event

The Breakfast Program was created, it allowed students to eat free or price-reduced breakfasts. Of course depending on the family's income like the School Nutrition Act. It was made sometime after said School Nutrition Act but was not made permanent until 1975
  • Fourth Major Event

The next event was when the Child and Adult Care Food Program was created. This program was put into place so that meals and snacks would be provided to adults and children in Public/Private non-private organizations. This also includes emergency shelters and for kids after-school care programs.
  • Fifth Major Event

The Fifth major event was the Summer Lunch Program. The Summer Lunch Program was a program that provided kids with meals regardless of whether they were going to summer school or not. It seems as though this program was created in 1968 possibly along with the Child and Adult Care Food Program or perhaps sometime after it.
  • Sixth Major Event

The sixth and Last Major Event is the creation of the Department of Defense Fresh Fruits and Vegetable Program. This Program was created much later as it was made in 1994. This Program provides schools and other places such as military bases with fresh fruits and vegetables. Due to this act schools no longer had to spend their funds to obtain fresh produce.
