School during the 1850s
During the 1850s, parents has a choice to spend money on their kids to go to school or to not attend school. Most people thought that is was more important for the boys to go to school so the girls can stay home and learn how to be a proper wife and mother. The school houses were mostly made out of wood and sometimes they were canvas tents. -
School during the 1860s
During the 1860s teachers focused on shaping the character and souls of their students along with a few main subjects. The structure and the way of teaching was decided by the teacher (there was no school boards). If girls were ever in school they would have a specialty subject which is sewing and the boys specialty subject would be drawing/art. The school was made out of wooden logs which is pretty much like in the 1850s. -
School during the 1870s
In the 1870s the Elementary Education Act was set so that children from the ages around 5-13 had to have education. The poor families would have the Boards pay the fees and wealthy families would pay the fees themselves. Schools would have wooden furniture such as desks and chairs. They would also have to sit in rows. -
School during the 1880s
In the 1880s the Public Instruction Act came into force. The act extended educational provision and introduced significant changes. The act modified some of the types of schools and created new ones which were called Superior Public, High, and Evening Public Schools. The schools in the 1880s were larger than previous years. They studied subjects such as reading, arithmetic, geography, history and grammar.
