Entering The U.S
A group of forward-thinking Americans were inspired by the Jebb’s vision and established Save the Children in the United States. In the first decade, Save the Children’s programs expanded to Tennessee, North Carolina, Mississippi and Missouri. -
The First Program Overseas
Individual child sponsorship began in response to the plight of children caught in the crossfire of the Second World War in Europe, prompting Save the Children to expand its programs overseas. -
Helping Children Hurt In WW2
Save the Children expanded education and farming programs to France, Holland, Italy, West Germany, Austria, Finland, Greece, Lebanon and South Korea. -
Expanding to Latin America and Africa
Save the Children’s first field office in Latin America opened in Colombia in 1963. This was followed by field office openings in Mexico, Honduras the Dominican Republic and Tanzania.

Building Reach and Expertise
Save the Children’s international headquarters moved to its current location in Westport, Connecticut. By the end of the decade, operating revenues had grown to $12.5 million and our programs reached children in 400 communities on five continents.

Saving the Lives of Children
Save the Children was one of the first to reduce maternal and child mortality. The “child survival revolution” was an effort to stop the deaths of the 40,000 children in the developing world who succumbed to preventable or treatable diseases. -
Protecting Children
With lessons learned in protecting children during previous armed conflicts, Save the Children took its expertise to Bosnia during the Balkan wars. By the end of the decade, operating revenues were about $115 million. -
Rewriting The Future
Save the Children launched a five-year Rewrite the Future initiative to help 43 million children in conflict-affected areas gain access to quality education. We alsolaunched a new program to help American children affected by disasters.
