Act Of Union
Passed by the British Parliament and declared on February 10th, 1841, the Act Of Union united all of the colonies of both Upper and Lower Canada, therefore sharing a government and constituting the province of Canada. -
Sir Charles Bagot Appointed as Governer General
Sir Charles Bagot agreed to supersede Lord Sydenham as governer general of the province of Canada. Bagot was rather successful in his few years as governer general but later resigned from his office on January 1843. -
The Great Famine
The Great Famine also knowncas the "Irish Potato Famine" started in 1845 when around half a million poverty-stricken-Irish people were evicted from thier homes. The Irish paupers were sent overseas on unsanitary and dangerous ships referred to as "coffin ships" and many died at sea. Those who survived were forced to relocate in British North America, living mainly off of the cheapest crop- potatoes. The Great Famine lasted 6 years, killing over 1,000,000 people of starvation and disease. -

The Demolition of the Parliament Buildings
A main Montreal riot occured on April 25th, 1849 when an English Tory mob set fire to the Parliament buildings in, and burnt them to the ground due to the passing of the Rebellion Losses Bill signed by Lord Elgin. -
Cholera Epidemic
Facing another cholera outbreak in 1851, the disease first brought to Canada by immigrants from Britain, returned yet again, killing tens of thousands of people in Canada each Epidemic. Citizens did many things to attempt to obviate the disease such as burn smudge pots, but mostly failed and the disease returned later. -

The Canadian–American Reciprocity Treaty of 1854, also known as the Elgin-Marcy Treaty, was a trade treaty between Great Britain and the United States, applying to British possessions in North America including the United Province of Canada, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland Colony. -
Canadian–American Reciprocity Treaty Abrogated
The treaty was abrogated by the Americans in 1865 and the US was angry at the British for having unofficially supported the South in the Civil War. -
Confederation
The Union of Brittish North America was a common and widespread topic in 1860. Confederation was not an instantaneous even of nationalism, but a prolonged process. The confederation of British North American colonies of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and the Province of Canada were just the first few nations to join confederation which eventually lead our country to what it is today.
