Hawker Siddeley Harrier - prototypes built
The world’s first operational VTOL aircraft . It had a very good top speed (735 mph) and range (1,200 miles). In the mid-1950s, the concept of a directable fan jet engine was being discussed by Michel Wibault. As the study got positive results, Camm designed an aircraft for the new engine. Two prototypes were constructed in 1959 (the P.1127). In 1965, the Royal air force decided to move forward
with an improved variant of the P.1127, the Harrier. k -
