DIvided French Society/Finacial Troubles
RiotDeficit SpendingIn this time there was 3 estates. The lowest estate in society was made of the vast majority of people. The second estate was made up of any one with a bit of nobilty. The first was made up of the clergy. During this time there was a lot of riots, such as the Paris wallpaper factory riot. This riot was a major turning point, this made people realize that they had more power then what they were being given. Nobles didn't stop the riots, they thought that they would fix the deficit spending. -
Deficit Spending
The government had been spending more money then what they were taking in. Half of the the governments income taxes went to paying their debts. In late 1780's harvest sent prices soaring, and hunger to the poorer people. -

Worst famine in memory. It forced people to roam the country side and flee to other towns. It also created more unemployment. -
Riot At Paris Wallpaper Factory
There was a rumor going around that the owner was going to cut wages, they vandalized his home. Nobles didn't worry about it beacause France was in an economic crisis. They thought that reforms would help. They were wrong and they went further into economic crises, deeper that government finances. -
Louis XVI Calls the Estates-General
Louis calls the estates generals, for a meeting to discuss the problem of the debt, at the end of the meeting they were at a deadlock vote. They then took the Tennis Court Oath. The group of people that met declared themselves as the National Assembly. The National Assembly then swore that they would meet when nessicary, and create a sound and just constitution, when circumstances may require it. -
Parisians Storm the Bastille
The people of France stole the spotlight for the National Assembly when they broke into the Bastille, they killed the commander and 5 guards. They also realised a few prisoners before finding that the weapons they wanted weren't there. This was a big part in starting the revolution. It was also a symbol of France's revolt from the abusive monarchy,This day is also their independence day, and has been since 1800. -
The Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen
This made all men equal, however this did not include women which made them angry. -
Angryn Fish Women Attack Palace
The women of Paris got angry and attacked the palace killing gaurds while trying to get to the king. -
Threats From Abroard
The failed escape from the king brought forth hostile threats from other nations. The king of Prussia and emperor of Austria issued the Declaration of Pilnitz, this document stated that the two monarchs threatened to intervene to protect the French monarchy. Even though this was mostly a bluff the French took it quite seriously, and they then entered a more radical phase of change, and conflict. -

Civil War (Raticals Take Over)
More WarDuring this time a newly elected Legislative Assembly took office. The currency also dropped in value. In 1791 Many sans-culattes demanded that the republic or govenment be ruled by representitives. In April 1792 the war of words between the French and European monarches moved to the battlefield. Eager to spread the revoltion and end tranny the Legislative Assembly declared war on Austria, Prussia, Britain and other states.The other countries expected an easy win but it lasted from 1792-1815. -

Monarchy Is Abolished
On August 10th 1792 a crowd of Parisians stormed the palaceand slaughted the kings guards, the royal family escaped before the mob got to them. One month later citizens attacked a prison that held nobles, and killed 1,200 prisoners, some of which were ordinary crimnals. Then they implicated the idea of Sufferage, which was the idea that all male citizens could vote not just property owners. -

Monarchy is Abolished (Continued)
Monarchy is AbolishedIn September 1792 a more radical idea aproached, they voted to abolish the monarchy and establish a republic. Deputies then drew up a constituion. Then the Jacobins set out to erase all tracks of older order. After this the put the king on trial, and declared him guilty, and sentanced him to death. They then did the same with his wife. They were beheaded months apart leaving their children behind. -

Robespierre and the Reign of Terror
To deal with the threats to France, the Convention created the Committee of Public Safety. The 12 person committee had almost absulote power, as it battled to save the revlution. They were also in charge of trials and executions. Then we have Robespierre enter the scene, he is a tyrantwith a selfless dedication to the revolution. He quickly rose to a leader of the committee. He wanted to abolish slavery, and promoted religous toerance. -

RobespierreHe also believed that Liberty couldn't have been secure unless criminals lost their heads. He became a huge fan of the Guillotine, this helped the reighn of terror, which lasted from September 1793 to July 1794. In this time court had hasty trials most often leading to death by guillotine. Their were often crowds supporting the beheadings. Approximatly 17,000 people were killed by it, many falsly accused by thier neighbors. Members of the committee turned against him and arrested and killed him. -

Third Stage of the Revolution
This started when they signed the third constitution since 1789. The Constitution of 1795 set up a five-man Directory and a two-house legislature elected by male citizens of property. The directory help power from 1795 to 1799. In this timespan peace was made with Prussia and Spain, but war was till going on with Austria and Great Britain. Leaders helped themselves but failed to solve real problems. Chaos began they called in Napolean to restore order. Before too long he became leader of France. -

French FlagAfter the revolution was over the people of France had a sense of pride in their nation becaus they felt it was thier nation. They had civic festivals. They created a song by putting "together the children of the fatherland" to mach against the "bloody banner of tyranny" these to songs joined and became "La Mareillaise" thier national anthem. This song was created while Marseilles, a port city was up in arms with the rest of France.
