Mongols invade 1200-1400
The Mongols invaded Russia in 1200 through 1400. The small princedom of Moscow was not conquered, which later became the capital of Russia. Russia was separated from the rest of Europe and “missed” the Renaissance. -

Czar Ivan the Terrible (IV)
Czar Ivan the IV or Ivan the Terrible began expanding Russia and strengthened the power of the throne. Anyone who opposed him got murdered. Russian nobility supported him and got land and servants in return. He commissioned the building of Saint Basil’s Cathedral. -
Romanov becomes Czar

Serfdom
In 1649, serfdom (slavery) became legal. -
France invades
In 1812 Napoleon from Frabce Invades Russia with 600,000 men.The Russian fight back and the French retreat with less than 10,000 men left. -
Czar Alexander the II
Czar Alexander the II emancipated the serfs, made more opportunities for a better life, built railroads, modern banking systems, established a jury system, and made freedom of the press. He did all of this to help modernize Russia. -
Alaska sold
In 1867, Alaska was sold to the United States for $7.2 million. -
Faberge Egg
In 1885 Czar Alexander the III ordered the first Faberge Egg for his wife Czarina Maria. -
Czar Nicholas the II
Czar Nicholas the II reluctantly became czar at age 26. He created a constitutional monarchy by establishing the Duma, an elected parliament, giving voice the people of Russia. He had trouble sharing power with the Duma, so he would fire them and get others in office that agreed with him more. His son Alexi had hemophilia. -
Rasputin
Gregory Rasputin, a mystical faith healer, was the only one who could soothe Alexi. Czarina Alexandra and the royal family were grateful to him. Rasputin then began making political suggestions and the people of Russia became suspicious of him. Romanov distant relatives killed him, as he predicted in a letter, and Rasputin predicted that the Romanovs would die within 2 years at the hands of the Russia people. -
USSR
1922 USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Rebulics or Soviet Union) was established. -
Joseph Stalin
In 1929, Stalin became the sole dictator of USSR. He maintained power in three ways: Communist Party, KGB, and the Soviet Army. -
USSR and USA
USSR and USA had a space race to reach the moon and put satellites in space. USSR had a bad harvest, bought food aid from the USA. -
1989-1991
In 1989, the Cold War ends. Berlin Wall has broken down. In 1991, a failed coup occurs and Gorbachev resigns. -

Vladimer Putin is elected as president of Russia again after Medvedev finishes his turn, -
Vikings come to Russia
Vikings from Sweeden crossed the Baltic Sea and settled west of the Ural Mountains. They set up small farming communties. Because of good trade between Sweeden and the Byzantine Empire, small kingdoms set up among the rivers. Vikings then soon became known as Rus (Russians). -
