The Russo-Japanese War
In the late 1800s, Russia and
Japan competed for control of Korea and Manchuria. They both ended up signing agreements but Russia broke them, the Japanese attacked the Russians due to their poor actions and this resulted in a revolt in the midst of the war. This relates to the theme of Revolution because it shows how conflicts are going to be needed to improve the system that we now have today. -
Czars resist change
In 1881, Alexander III reformed halted all the reforms in Russia. In order to wipe out revolutionaries, he imposed strict censorship codes on published materials and written documents, including private letters. This played a role in Revolution because this was the start of a changing process, but not all of these rebuilding process was positive because they started building more factories and that then led to poor working conditions which served a new problem that had to be handled. -
Bloody Sunday: The Revolution of 1905
On January 22, 1905, almost 200,000 workers and their families
approached the czar’s Winter Palace
in St. Petersburg. They wanted better working
conditions, more personal freedom,
and an elected national legislature. This shows Revolution because it progressed into our working conditions now, in order to have a successful business you have to protect you workers and to have a successful country you have to give them the freedoms they deserve. -
World War I: The Final Blow
w In 1914, Nicholas II made the decision to add Russia into World War I but Russia couldn't handle the military and economic costs. Before a year had passed, more than 4 million
Russian soldiers had been killed, wounded, or taken prisoner. This proved that Russia’s involvement in World War I was weak of czarist rule and military leadership. This relates to Revolution because we can't just throw other countries away if they aren't physically and economically ready for the hard battle ahead. -
The March Revolution
In March 1917, women workers in Petrograd led a strike. In the next five days, riots flared up over shortages of bread and fuel. Nearly 200,000 workers swarmed the streets shouting. At first the soldiers obeyed orders to shoot the rioters but later sided with them. This shows Revolution because people that were supposed to harm the women on strike eventually sided with them because they saw the benefits in which they were on strike for and how it could develop their country. -
The Czar steps down
The March Revolution forced Czar Nicholas II to step down from the throne. The March Revolution succeeded in bringing down the Czar. This shows Revolution because people saw that he wasn't benefiting their country to their fullest extent so they forced him out so they could open up more possible opportunities. -
Lenin Returns to Russia
The Germans believed that Lenin and his Bolshevik supporters would hurt the Russian war effort against Germany. They arranged Lenin’s return to Russia after many years of exile.
Lenin reached Petrograd in April 1917. This shows Revolution because they thought about how poorly it would've effected Russia and thought about it could potentially benefit them or the other way around. -
The Bolshevik Revolution
Lenin and the Bolsheviks soon gained control of the Petrograd soviet, as well as the soviets in other major Russian cities. By the fall of 1917, people in the cities were rallying and they gained a lot of support so Lenin decided to take action. This shows Revolution because he began to take charge of the people and stood up and didn't tolerate nonsense. -
Bolshevik in Power
Within days after the Bolshevik takeover Lenin ordered
that all farmland be distributed to the peasants.The Bolshevik government also signed a truce with Germany to stop all fighting
and began peace talks. This shows Revolution because they changed the thoughts and now gave farmland to the peasants and they were becoming allies with more countries. -
New Economic Policy
In March 1921, Lenin temporarily put his plan off for a
state-controlled economy. But instead he made the New Economic Policy (NEP).This policy allowed peasants to sell their surplus crops instead of turning them over to the government. This shows Revolution because he was changing the ways of their government by allowing peasants to sell their surplus crops.
