Another War Lost
First great war of 20th century. Russia wanted a warm-water port on the Pacific Ocean. Japan wanted Korea to be recognized as Japanese sphere of influence and offered to recognize Russian dominance in Manchuria, but Russia refused. Japan declared war on Russia and defeated the Russians. -
Bloody Sunday Massacre
Workers led by radical priest march to Winter Palace in St. Petersburg. Imperial forces open fire on demonstrators and kills and wounds hundreds. Strikes and riot break out throughout country. -
First Time Duma Met
Meeting took place in Winter Palace. The Duma presented an "address to the throne" which demanded universal suffrage, direct elections, abolition on upper chamber, parliamentary government, and land reforms. -
Battle of Tannenberg
The battle was between The Russian and German Empires. Germany almost completely destroyed Russia's 2nd Army and Commander Alexander Samsonov died in this battle. It kept Russia off German soil until WWII. Germany defeated the Russians. -
March Revolution
There were many strikes, demonstrations, and mutinies in Petrograd along with food and fuel shortages. Nicholas II abdicates and includes son Alexis. Mikhail refuses to accept throne and prvisional government is formed. -
November Revolution
Bolsheviks take over Petrograd and the Winter Palace is the last hold out for the Provisional Government which is also taken by the Bolsheviks. -
Changes in Politics
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk was signed between Russia and Germany to take Russia out if WWI. The Bolshevik Party changes their name to the Communist Party and the capital of Russia is changed from St. Petersberg to Moscow. -
Treaties
Treaty of Riga was signed as an armistice between Russia and Poland. Treaty of Tartu was signed for Russia's recognition of Finland's independence. The Black Army sings treaty of alliance. and will prove deadly to White Army. -
New Economic Policy
Was implemented due to many peasant revolts against war communism. The economic policy was a mixture of socialism and capitalism. It was heavy of industry, banking, and transport, but allowed a free internal market (private enterprise). -
Creation of U.S.S.R
Lenin suffers second stroke and retires from politics. The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (U.S.S.R.) is established.
