Social Democratic party was a revolutionary party that wanted the destruction of capitalism and overthrow the czar. The group that had once been united in common goals was now split into the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks. -
Russian War with Japan
Russia and Japan fought a war over the control of lands in china and Korea, which Japan easily won. This defeat showed the declining power of Russia as well as its poor leadership. -
Bloody Sunday
Workers went to the Winter palace to peacfully protest when the chief of security ordered the police to open fire on them. After being held responsible for over 100 deaths Nicholas II was given the name "Bloody Nicholas". -
Revolution of 1905
The revolution started the moment the police opened fire. Workers organized themselves into workers councils called Soviets. Nicholas II created some reforms to give the citizens more rights and limit his own power. -
Czar Nicholas II Abdicates the Throne
An uprising in Petrograd causes the army to join the striking workers. This causes the Czar to give up his throne. After this Nicholas and his family are taken to a discreet location and killed. -
Bolshevik Revolution
The provisiional government that was setup after the abdication of the Czar is weak and the Bolsheviks seize power. After this Russia became a communist state of which Lenin is made supreme leader. -
Treaty of Brest-Litovsk
After realizing they cannot defeat Germany their part in the war comes to a peaceful end by submitting Ukraine, Poland, and Baltic territories. However not all the Russians are happy with this and Civil War breaks out. -

Russian Civil War
Disagreement over the treaty leads to a split between the Bolsheviks and Mensheviks. The cheka lead a campaign of terror to rid the counrty of non-bolsheviks. This leaves much of Russia in ruins, it also results in 6 million deaths.
