The Decembrist Revolt
The Decembrist Revolt was when a small group of nobles and army officers tried to overthrow the czar. The goal of the protesters was to set up a constituional monarchy, where there would be a king or queen and parliament who ruled the country. Czar Nicholas I killed 5 nobles and sentenced 100,000 people to Siberia and had major censorship applied to schools, and secret police were sent out to spy on teachers. -
Nicholas II Becomes Czar (Official Coronation Date)
Nicholas II took over the trone when Alexander III died. He was the leader during the Russo-Japanese War. Unfortunately, him and his entire famliy was killed when the Russian economy went down. -
Bloody Sunday
Blody Sunday was when Father Georgi Gapon led a peaceful march to the czar's palace with a hundred or so men, women and children. As they grew closer and closer to the czar's palace, thousands and thousands of people joined them. The purpose of the march was to give the czar a petition, stating that they demanded better working conitions and more pay. When they reached the palace, soldiers opened fire and killed hundreds and injured thousands of unarmed protesters. -
Russo-Japanese War
The Russo-Japanese War took place when Russia and Japan were fighting over the control of Manchuria and the Pacific coast of Korea. Out of logic, the Russians should have won because of the size difference of the two countries. However, Japan crushed Russia and took over the locations that the two countries were fighting over. Russia wasn't industrialized and up to date, so therefore they weren't able to produce the needed weapons to defeat Japan and win the war. -
WWI Russian Involvement (1914-1918)
Russia fights Germany and because of lack of supplies and weapons many people die. The citizens are even more angry and have to live in more economic hardships after the war. -
March Revolution (led to end of czars)
The workers started to have riots against the czar and wanted to overthrow the czar. Also, the czar Nicholas II created the Duma (started disobeying czar). Finally, the people overthrew the czar for good (Nicholas II was the last czar). -
Czar Nicholas II Abdicates the Throne
Czar Nicholas II was forced to abdicate the Russian throne because of unrest the czar of Russia formed an elected committee. But this committee had little power and failed to resolve Russia’s basic problems. -
Russian Civil War (1918-1921)
White and Red armies faced off to take control over Russia, but the Red army won (communism) and was led by Leon Trotsky. This was when Russia became the Soviet Union (USSR). -
The Creation of the USSR
It was the succession from the Russian Empire and it was a communist country. It was ruled by Lenin, and Joseph Stalin after Lenin was dead, it grew to become the most powerful country in the world until the collapse of communism in 1991, and that’s when the USSR ended. -
Vladmir Lenin's Death
Lenin was the one who continued Marx’s ideas, but he died in 1924. He was the one who thought about how the USSR was going to function and who was going to govern after he was dead. (He suffered a series of strokes) His body is embalmed in the Red Square in Moscow.
