    The first meeting of the Duma. Leaders were moderates who wanted Russia to have a similar constitution as Britain. Duma was dissolved after 10 weeks.
  • THE DRAGGING OF THE WAR

    Russia was dragged into World War I by Nicholas II. Russia was unprepared, and they were no match for Germany. Before one year more than 4 million soldiers were killed or wounded. It revealed the weakness of czarist rule.

    Women textile workers led a city wide strike in Petrograd. Five days were riots and shortages of bread and fuel, 200,000 workers were in the streets.

    Armed factory workers stormed Winter Palace in Petrograd calling themselves the Bolshevik Red guards. Kerensky and his collegues disappeared almost as quickly as the czarist regime they replaced. They took over government offices and arrested leaders of provisional government.

    Several western nations including the United States sent military aid to Russia to help the White Army, but the Red Army ended up winning.

    The country was named the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics in honor of the councils that helped launch the Bolshevik Revolution.
