Ivan IV died and Boris Godunov, one of Ivans friends takes over the country because Ivan's son isn't old enough, Ivan's son was later murdered which people believe to be the work of Godunov so he could become czar. -

People distrusted Boris and he couldn't deal with the issue of famine which allowed invaders to easily take Russia, this caused a few years of chaos. -
