Due to riots on the homefront, Russia withdraws from WWI

Two revolutions in Russia lead to the creation of a communist government. The revolutions are lead by Vladamir Lenin and Leon Trotsky. They lead the Bolsheviks to overthrow the provisional government without a struggle.

Russia makes peace with Germany. Russia gives up large amout of land to the Germans.

The Communist "Reds" fight the counterrevoltionary "Whites" in a civil war. Some of the Allied powers from World War I intervened to help the whites, hoping they would help support the fight against Germany. In the end the Reds appealed to the nationalism inside most Russians and ended up winnig the war.

World War I ends. Allied powers try to make Germany pay by blaming the war on them. Germany loses almost everything. These events lead up to World War II

Communists lead by Joesph Stalin produce a new constituion that seemed to be both democratic and socialist. An elected legilature ,called the "Supreme Soviet", was set up. The new government brough the old Russian empire together in the new Union of Soviet Socialist Republics(USSR or Soviet Union).

The death of Vladamir Lenin brought a desperate power struggle between the top Communist leaders, Leon Trotsky and Joesph Stalin.

With Trotsky gone because he fled the country, Joseph Stalin now has aboslute power of the USSR. Stalin begins his 5 year plan on improving the country.

Stalin has the kulaks(wealthy peasants) land confiscated and sends them to labor camps.

Stalin begins a large genocide of Ukrainians in a man made faminine. This famine is called the "Great Famine"

Stalin fears that other Communist party member are plotting against him, so he begins the great purge. The purge sentenced the convicted to jail,labor camps or death.

NAZI Germany invades USSR. Stalin decides to mobalize against Germany.
