Rules and Procedures
o G7 science teacher and students meet everyday for 60 min.
o This timeline shows the activities conducted during the first week to discuss and set rules and procedures for the rest of the year.
o Rules and procedures need to be revised periodically and adjusted if needed.
o I would send a letter to the parents on the 5th day, introducing myself, rules and procedures and consequences. I would inform parents that their children had signed contracts promising to respect rules and procedures. -
Day 2
o Review rules from the previous day and brainstorm scenarios of what happens when they're broken - 10 min
o Discuss consequences with the students (what they mean and why they're important) and make sure they are hung somewhere visible in the classroom - 15 min
o Activity: - 35 min
• Discuss the word procedure: what is means and why it's important.
• Divide into groups and discuss: what are the things regarding classroom routines that you want to know more about or learn.
• Share outcome. -
Day 3
o Review rules again - 5 min
o Review what was discussed the day before regarding procedures - 5 min
o Teacher shares with students on a projector a list of procedures and what is expected of the students - 25 min
o Students practice some of the procedures such as lining up, forming into groups, entering and leaving the class, asking for help, lost and found, etc. - 25 min -
Day 4
o Review rules and procedures - 10 min
o Practice some of the procedures, especially going to the lab and the procedures inside the lab and procedure in case of emergency - 30 min
o Discuss: what do the students expect of the teacher? - 15 min -
Day 5
o Review rules and procedures and practice some of the difficult ones - 30 min
o Explain what a class contract is and hand out two copies of contracts holding all rules and procedures and expectations to students to read and sign, each student keeps a copy - 20 min
