Death of Jesus
After a council of Jews convicted Jesus of blasphemy for claiming to be the son of God, Jesus was crucified by Pontius Pilate, a Roman prefect of Judea. In the Bible, Pilate asked the Jews how to punish him, and they respond, “Crucify him!” Pilate says that he is innocent of this, and the Jews say, “His blood is on us and on our children!” For centuries afterwards, Christians blamed Jews for the death of Jesus and used the words of the Bible to support anti-Semitic laws and actions.
