A 28-year old anarchist named Leon Czolgosz shot President William McKinley in the stomach on September 6, 1901, eight days later, McKinley died, naming Vice President at the time Theodore Roosevelt the new president. -
Energy Crisis
The Anthracite Coal Strike in Pennsylvania at the Scranton Courthouse was a strike against the big coal companies and the workers and miners, this was not the first time miners had gone on strike, and not the last time either. Over 150,000 miners and workers went on strike in May of 1902. More than 5,000 policemen guarded the mines. -
Elkins Act
Named after Senator Stephen B. Elkins of West Virginia, This act was taken by Pennsylvania to end the practice of rebates. This act gave federal court the ability to end rate discrimination. -
Pelican Island, Florida named first national wildlife refuge
Made a National wildlife refuge by executive decision by president Roosevelt. It’s a 3 acre island with a 2.5 acre of surrounding water located off the east coast of Florida. It served to help the birds that were going to be extinct with the plume hunting. -
