Romeo Dallaire Enrolls in the Canadian Armed Forces
He enrolled in the Canadian Army in 1964 after four years in the Cadets and the Reserves. -

Promotion to Brigadier-General

militaire royal de Saint-Jean. -
Dallaire was appointed Commander 5e Groupe-brigade
After studying at the British Higher Command and Staff Course,
Camberly, United Kingdom in the spring of 1991, he was appointed Commander 5e Groupe-brigade
mécanisé du Canada at Valcartier on 5 July 1991. -
Meritorious Service Cross
He was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross in
recognition of his exceptional leadership and professionalism. -
Dallaire takes command of the United Nations Observer Mission - Uganda and Rwanda
He left Valcartier on 1 July 1993 to take command
of the United Nations Observer Mission - Uganda and Rwanda (UNOMUR) and the United Nations
Assistance Mission for Rwanda (UNAMIR). -

He was promoted to the rank of Major-General on 1 January 1994. -
The Rwanda Genocide
Over the course of approximately 100 days, or more, from the assassination of Juvénal Habyarimana on 6 April through mid-July, at least 500,000 people were killed.Romeo stayed because he knew that if he left more and more people would die. -
The Impact He Had In Rwanda
He was asked and ordered to return home by his superieors but he refused. This had an outstanding impact on the lives of people living in Rwanda. With this brave decision Dallaire has impacted the way that we look at the conflict around us and how it can be changed starting with one persons dream and drive. -

The Vimy Award
On 2 June 1995, the Canadian Conference of
Defence Associations presented him with “The Vimy Award”. -
Legion of Merit
On 9 January 1996, he was awarded the Legion of Merit by the United States -
Chief of Staff to the Assistant Deputy Minister
On 2 July 1996, he
assumed the position of Chief of Staff to the Assistant Deputy Minister (Personnel) Group. -
Lieutenant-General
Promoted to Lieutenant-General, he assumed the duties of Assistant Deputy Minister (Human Resources-
Military) in April 1998. -
Special Advisor tothe Chief of the Defence Staff
On 5 February 1999, Lieutenant-General Dallaire was appointed to the position of Special Advisor to
the Chief of the Defence Staff for Officer Professional Development. -
Medically Released form the Forces
His duties there dealt with matters regarding the Reform of the Officer Corps, including the General and Admiral Senior
Executive branch, and its professional development into the future. He remained in this position until
medically released from the Canadian Forces on 18 April 2000. -
Order of Canada
He was invested as an Officer of the Order of Canada in October 2002 by the Governor General of
Canada -
"Shake Hands With The Devil"
In 2003 he published “Shake Hands With The Devil – the failure of humanity in Rwanda” an
internationally recognized best selling book on the Rwanda genocide based on his experiences in and
after the United Nations Mission to Rwanda in 1993-94. -
Spreading the word
Dallaire was being looked at as an amazing historical roll model and became inspired to write a book to show the world what it was like to be in his situation. This effected people because it inspired them to make change in the less fortunate parts of the world and even in their community. -
Paul Martin summoned him to the senate
Her Excellency the Right Honourable Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, on the advice
of the Right Honourable Paul Martin, Prime Minister of Canada, summoned General Dallaire to the
Senate on 24 March 2005. -
Grand Officer
invested as a Grand Officer of the National Order of Québec in June 2005. -
Genocide Prevention
General Dallaire was appointed to the United Nations
Secretary General’s Advisory Committee on Genocide Prevention in the spring of 2006. -

The book was released as a full-length feature
film Shake Hands With the Devil – The Journey of Roméo Dallaire in the fall of 2007 and won the
2007 Emmy Award for Best Documentary. -
Hitting the Silver Screen
With the intrest that romeo gained after writing the book he then believed that he should explain to people what it was like through the eyes that he saw the situation from. This expanded peoples knowledge of these important tradegies that can be stopped and know many people are aware thast they pesses the power to change the world. -
Olympic Flag Bearers
Up to this date Romeo is respected and is important to Canada in many ways. As a man of great integraty Dallaire is still potraied to the world as important to Canadian. He was asked at the 2010 Vancouver olympic games.
