The servants of the Capulets and Montagues engage in an argument due to simple insults and their loyalty to their masters. This results in the families and the people of Verona brawling in the streets. Therefore, the Prince decrees that any more fighting between the families will result in death as a punishment.

Act 1: Scene 1 Continued (Day 1)

Benvolio discusses Romeo's depressed state (keeping to himself, crying, walking about at all hours, etc.) with the Montagues. At their request he seeks out Romeo to find out what is wrong. Romeo believes he is in love with Rosline, but because she refuses to be involved with him, he thinks his life is over/has no meaning.

Act 1: Scene 2 (Day 1)

Capulet plans Juliet's marriage to Paris. He give Paris permission to "woo" Juliet, so that she can fall in love with him. However, Paris has to wait two years to marry Juliet because Capulet believes that thirteen is too young for marriage.

Act 1: Scene 2 Continued (Day 1)

Romeo and Benvolio assist Capulet's servant with the family's party invitations, which leads to an invite to the event. However, their invite comes with a stipulation - they cannot be "of the house of Montague." Although they know who is having the party and the penalty for fighting, Romeo and his friends decide to crash the party anyway.

Act 1: Scene 3 (Day 1)

Lady Capulet informs Juliet that she is supposed to marry Paris in two years. Juliet agrees to give him a chance, but she isn't promising anything.

The audience is introduced to Romeo's best friend, Mercutio. Mercutio, like his other friends, believes Romeo needs to meet someone new and forget about Rosaline. According to Mercutio, she is an unrealistic dream, and dreams are a waste of time.

Act 1: Scene 5 (Day 1)

Tybalt sees Romeo at the party and immediately wants to fight him because he is a Montague. However, Capulet stops him because he knows Romeo hasn't been involved in the feud so far. Also, Romeo sees Juliet for the first time, which leads to him immediately forgetting Rosaline/falling in love with Juliet. They share a kiss and romantic words before they discover that their families hate each other.

Act 2: Scene 1 (Day 1)

Romeo hides from his friends so that he can speak to Juliet alone. At no point does he consider the fact that he is trespassing on Capulate's estate. Mercutio and the others look for Romeo with no success. They joke about how conjuring Rosaline might produce Romeo since he has been so obsessed with her. However, they are unaware of his sudden change of heart.

Romeo overhears Juliet talking about how much she likes him and that despite his name he is still wonderful. He reveals himself, they profess their love for each other, and decide to get married even though they just met.

Act 2: Scene 3 (Day 2)

Romeo discusses his plans to wed Juliet with Friar Lawrence. Friar Lawrence questions how serious he can be since he was just in love with Rosaline. He also advises that it is better to move slow in relationships, but ultimately agrees to marry them because he believes their marriage could end the feud.

Act 2: Scene 4 (Day 2)

Benvolio and Mercutio are waiting impatiently for Romeo, and they begin discussing Tybalt. Tybalt has sent a letter challenging Romeo, which is a concern because Tybalt is an intense fighter with anger issues. Romeo finally shows up, but he doesn't reveal where he has been despite Mercutio's witty probing.

Act 2: Scene 4 Continued (Day 2)

The Nurse (Juliet's confidante) appears to discover the plans for Romeo and Juliet's marriage. After Mercutio thoroughly insults her and leaves, Romeo tells her to have Juliet to pretend to go to confession so that she can leave the house. The Nurse warns Romeo that he better be serious about Juliet or else.

Act 2: Scene 5 (Day 2)

Juliet waits impatiently for news from the Nurse. Because she is aware of Juliet's impatience and wants to tease her, the Nurse stalls for a time, which leads to a very annoyed Juliet. However, the Nurse finally tells her Romeo's plans for marriage, which leads to an extremely happy Juliet.

Act 2: Scene 6 (Day 2)

Romeo and Juliet are married by Friar Lawrence the day after they met. They have only spoken to each other twice.

Act 3: Scene 1 (Day 2)

Benvolio urges Mercutio to go home because he fears a fight with the Capulets. However, Mercutio is spoiling for a fight. Tybalt appears and wants to fight Romeo, but is willing to settle for Mercutio since he is available. At that point, Romeo appears, tries to establish peace, and refuses to fight Tybalt. In an effort to defend Romeo, Mercutio fights Tybalt and is killed; Romeo retaliates and kills Tybalt. Therefore, the Prince banishes Romeo because he fought to defend Mercutio.

Act 3: Scene 2 (Day 2)

The Nurse reveals to Juliet that Romeo has killed her cousin Tybalt. This results in turmoil and emotional confusion for Juliet because she loves Romeo and Tybalt. It is difficult for her to separate her feelings and accept these events. However, she decides to forgive Romeo for his actions.

Act 3: Scene 3 (Day 2)

Friar Lawrence tells Romeo he is banished; he cries like a child and says that banishment is worse than death. The Nurse shows up looking for Romeo and shares Juliet's reaction to the news. Therefore, Friar Lawrence gives Romeo a lecture about his childish behavior and tells him that he should go and comfort Juliet. However, he must leave by morning or the watchmen will find him.

Act 3: Scene 4 (Day 2)

Capulet informs Lady Capulet that Juliet will be married to Paris in a few days. Therefore, she needs to tell her of this event.

Act 3: Scene 5 (Day 3)

Juliet bids Romeo farewell after their wedding night. Lady Capulet informs Juliet of her upcoming marriage, and she immediately refuses. Lord Capulet enters and becomes angry/insulted that his daughter would refuse his choice of a husband. He gives her an ultimatum (marry Paris or be disowned) and leaves. Juliet turns to the Nurse for comfort/advise, but she encourages Juliet to marry Paris since Romeo is banished. This leads Juliet feeling betrayed.

Act 4: Scene 1 (Day 3)

Jun 22, 1500

Juliet goes to see Friar Lawrence and discovers Paris making plans to marry her. Once he leaves, Juliet breaks down and tells Friar Lawrence that she would rather die than marry Paris. Friar Lawrence gives her a potion and a plan that will convince everyone she is dead, so she can leave and be with Romeo.

Act 4: Scene 2 and 3 (Day 3)

Juliet goes home, acts like a dutiful daughter, and agrees to marry Paris. This will prevent them from discovering her real plan. Later that night, she dismisses the Nurse and consumes the poison despite her fears that it may not work at all or it may work too well and kill her.

Act 4: Scene 4 and 5 (Day 4)

The Capulet's and the servants are preparing for the wedding. When the Nurse is sent to wake Juliet she discovers that she is "dead." Despite his previous anger at Juliet's defiance, Capulet is devastated, and the entire household begins morning for their loss.

Act 5: Scene 1 (Day 4)

Jun 25, 1500

Romeo has dreamt of his death, which concerns him. However, before he can fully analyze this omen, Balthasar (his servant) shows up and tells him Juliet is dead. This results in extreme grief, anger, and vow to be with Juliet tonight. Then, Romeo visits an apothecary to acquire poison because he doesn't want to live without Juliet.

Act 5: Scene 2 (Day 4)

Although Friar Lawrence had a plan for helping Juliet, he soon discovers that there are some holes in it. To prevent Romeo from worrying about Juliet or receiving the wrong information, he sent Friar John with a message to Romeo. However, Friar John was unable to reach Romeo. So, Friar Lawrence must go get Juliet out of the tomb and hope Romeo hasn't received any news of her "death."

Act 5: Scene 3 (Day 4)

Jun 27, 1500

Paris runs into Romeo when he takes flowers to Juliet's grave. This results in a fight and Paris' death. Later, Romeo finds Juliet's body and takes the poison, which causes his death. Unfortunately, this is right before Juliet awakens, discovers his body, and ends her own life.

Act 5: Scene 3 Continued (Day 4)

Friar Lawrence and Balthasar explain to the families and the Prince what has happened. Because of their many losses, Lord Montague and Lord Capulet decide to reconcile.
