Rome was founded in 753 BC by Romulus and Remus located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Rome expanded greatly and became the largest empire of the ancient era with a population of 50 to 80 million inhabitants. Rome began as a hunting village of the Iron Age, by the middle of the 8th century BC it had expanded to 6.5 million square kilometers, civilization passed from a monarchy to a classical republic with an increasingly autocratic empire during its 12 centuries of existence
