Jim Crow laws
Created sometime in the 1880s, these laws allowed for the segregation between whites and blacks and furthered discrimination and injustice through almost an entire century after they Jim Crow laws were enacted. These laws were responsible for changing public opinion about blacks. After the Civil War, there was a new hope for blacks which was to free them from slavery. Although they finally gained equality, they remained segregated from the rest of the society. -
Chinese Exclusion Act
This act prohibited the immigration of Chinese (laborers) to enter the US. Many Chinese wanted to come to America to find part-time jobs to earn enough money and help support their family. If the US had allowed these numbers of Chinese immigrants to work in our factories, many whites wouldn't have had to work in the factories. That was one possible factor as to why the US did not enforce Chinese immigrants into the US. This act wasn't to be repealed into the 1940s. -
Sinking of the Lusitania
A German submarine ship torpedoed a British ship called the Lusitania that carried citizens and tons of war munitions. After this event, public opinion turned against the German empire. -
Sedition Act
Designed to protect the US from WWI, the Sedition Act imposed any form of penalty to those who make false statements that interfered with war, insulting the government and country. Those who would violate this act would be fined. This would help power the government and prevent people from spreading rumors about the war. -
Zimmermann Telegram
Germany offered an alliance with Mexico by using secret code. Germany promised that if US were to remain out of war, then Mexico could regain lost territory from the Mexican War in 1846-1848. This is important to note because nations began to side with other nations, and the US was forced into war. -
18th amendment
It prohibited the distribution or manufacturing of alcoholic beverages. It was important for this era because it allowed women to get closer to obtain rights. However, it was almost important to note that it led the country into the Great Depression because the government was not gaining enough money from entertainment and public places where there was alcohol. -
Eugene v. Debs
Head of a Railway Union and Pullman strike, he was imprisoned for his opposition of the US involvement in the WWII and he also ignored the demand to stop striking. While in jail, he was able to study socialism and how to solve problems. He soon emerged as a Socialist leader. (unknown of date but he was active between 1900-1920) -
Red Scare
The Red Scare of the 1920s was marked by the fear of Bolshevism and and anarchism thanks to the Russian Revolution. The fear of the Americans had a large effect on the government and the public that lasted not until the 1950s. -
19th amendment
This amendment finally gave the women the right to vote. this was a very important part of history because for decades, women have been struggling for independence and rights. Now all of that is changed, new political opinions are brought to the table and changed our lives today -
Immigration Act of 1924
A law that limited the annual admission of immigrants from any nation to 2% of any nations' residents. The continuation against the justices of immigrants continue as many Americans saw that there was too much diversity and not enough native-born Americans. -
John Scopes
A substitute high school voluntarily taught students about the Theory of Evolution also known as Darwinism. Violating the Tennessee state law, John Thomas Scopes was fined $100. This trial represents the ongoing controversy between the social and rational thinking and the religious thinking. Some states were selected to teach evolution, but because some states did and did not allow it caused interference. -
20th amendment
Officially gave permission to the vice president to fill in role of a president if they suffer from illness or got shot. This idea is very important because it provides a more well-organized system and the government can not only elect the president but two representatives. This amendment also organizes the dates at which the federal government's elected officials close. -
21st Amendment
Repealing the 18th amendment, prohibition is finally removed. This is important because it finally ended the nationwide debate over alcohol. Although, some states agreed to continue prohibition by maintaining state temperance laws. This balanced the politics and gave the states the option to continue or end prohibition.
