This was the time after the war that people had wanted everything go back to normal. Even though it seemed as if people wanted things to go back to how they were, many things had changed in this time period. -
Palmer Raids
This was the United States Justice department trying to arrest and deport Radical Anarchists. There were raids in late 1919. But Herbert Hoover wanted more to be done and he organized the raids in 1920. What the underlieing cause of these raids is thought to be is "The Red Scare". The term iven for the fear of radical anarchists after WWI. People were afraid of Leftists trying to take over our government. The fear became real after some letter bombs went off from Italian Anarchists. -
Babe Ruth To the Yankees became public
Babe Ruth had been a member of the Red Sox for five years. He was then sold to the Yankees on December 26th . In return the Red Sox got $125k up front and 3 $25k bonds with interest allowed to be used at anytime over the next six years. -
The 19th Amendement
The 19th Amenedment was the amendment that gave women the right to vote. This is when it was ratified by the U.S. But there were some states that didn't ratify it until later on. -
Ford's Model T costs $300
Ford did some big things in the 20s. By the 1920s, the Model T accounted for the 9 out of 10 cars around the world. Before the vehicle was discontinued in 1927, over 15 million cars had been made. Another things Ford did was pay his workers $5 per day. Back then that was a huge amount. But the reasoning behind this was not because of how good he thought his workers were, but because he wanted them to buy the product they were building. -
President Harding Dies
This is a big event in the 20s because Harding was planing on running second time which means coolidge might have never gotten elected into the White House. Harding was also a big key in the creation of the league of nations. Also signing a peace treaty with Germany and Austria. Harding is also know for scandals during his term. Most well known is the Teapot Dome scandal. 1 of the people in Harding's cabinet members and 7 other of his appointments were convicted and sent to jail. -
Scopes teaches Evolution Theory
John T. Scopes was a science teacher that was asked to teach the theory of evolution after Tennesse had outlawed the teahcing of it. He did this because The American Civil Liberties Union had offered to defend anyone who would teach the Evolution theory in school because they believed the law was a violation of Freedom of Speech. -
KKK march in Washington, D.C.
The Ku Klux Klan came back in 1915 after it had been disbanded in the 1870s. The Glan quickly grew in stregnth and at one point claimed to have between 4 and 5 million men in the Klan. They marched in DC in mid 1925 to try and gain more popularity but this so called "klanklave" marked the peak of their power and they started decline to about 30k men in 1930. -
Charles Lindbergh flies across the Atlantic Ocean
Charles Lindbergh was the first prson to flie from New York to Paris. And he did it in his single engine, single seat monoplane which was custom made for this. For the feit, he won $25k. The flight took 33 hours and 30 minutes. He landed on May 21st in Paris, France. -
Sacco Venzetti Executed
Sacco and Venzetti were two Italian Anarchists. On April 20th, 1920, there was a robbery and murder in Braintree, Massachusetts. Witnesses say there were 2 Italian looking men fleeing the scene. Police knew Sacco and Venzetti were Italian Anarchists. That made them obvious suspects. -
The first "talkie", "The Jazz Singer" is released
This was important because it revolutionized the movie business. It was called a talkie because it was the first movie with sound. The star of it was Al Jolson doing something that was popular back then called "black faced". -
Black Tuesday
This is the infamous day when the Stock Market started to crash. This was not what started the Great Deession, it ws just the thing that pushed our economy over the edge. The Great Depresion lasted until 1941 when the US decided to mobilize for WWII.
