The Proclamation of 1763
This order prohibited colonists from settling west of the Appalachian Mountains. -
The Sugar Act
This act lowered tax on molasses imported by the colonists. -
The Stamp Act
This law taxed almost all printed material including newspapers and playing cards. -
The Declaratory Act
This act stated that Parliament had the right to tax and make decisions for the colonies “in all cases” -
The Townshend Acts
This act taxed imports like glass, tea, and paper. -
Writs of Assistance Passed
This document allowed officials to search anywhere, anytime, for as long as they wanted for smuggled goods. -
The Boston Massacre
This fight was between Bostonians and British soldiers in which 5 colonists were killed by them. -
The Tea Act
This gave the British East India Company near total control of the tea market in the colonies and lowered some but not all taxes on tea. -
The Boston Tea Party
Colonists dressed up as Native Americans, boarded ships loaded with tea and threw 342 chests of tea overboard. -
The Coercive Acts
These laws were meant to punish colonists for resisting British authority. -
The Quebec Act
This law extended the border and made a government for Canada ignoring the colonies’ claim to that area. -
Battles of Lexington and Concord
There were two small battles with the British redcoats up against the minutemen of Lexington and, further out, Concord. -
The Seize of Fort Ticonderoga
Benedict Arnold and Ethan Allen seized a British fort with their militias. -
Battle of Bunker Hill
At Bunker and Breed’s Hill a militia commanded by William Prescott fought the redcoats and lost. -
Declaration of Independence Approved
This document declared the colonies’ freedom from Britain’s rule and expressed ideas of the three natural rights (life, liberty, and property).
