The Magna Carta
The Magna Carta was signed on June 19, 1215 betweeen the barons of Medieval England and King John. It was signed at Runneymede near Windsor Castle. It was created for the prupose of limiting the powers of the monarch and preserving the basic rights of free men in Europe. -

The Mayflower Compact
The Mayflower Compact was drafted to prevent dissent amongst Puritans and non-separatist Pilgrims who were at Plymouth alittle earlier. The compact was created because they needed some rules now that they were outside bounds of the government authouriy in England. -

Petition of Rights
It stated that there should be no tax without consent of Parliament. Also, ban on excessive bail and fires and on cruel and on unusual punishment. Charles I signed the document. -
English Bill of Rights
irginia's ratification made th Bill of Rights apart of the constitution. James Madison was involved in creating the Bill of Rights along with other federal officers (Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton). The document lists certain prohibitions on government's power. For example free excersie of religion. -

French and Indian War (seven years war)
The British and the French were the main players in the war. A great victory for the British was in 1758 at Louisburg. Also, the French lost their last foothold in Canada with the loss of Montral. The British ultimately won the conflict, and it was decided at the peace conference that the British recieved land from French. The treaty strengthens American colonies by removing European Rivals. -

King George III takes power
King George's support of England's role in the French Revolutionary Wars in the later 1790s helped strengthen relationships with the French. After colonies were settled in America, King George still wanted to control them, which the people in America didn't like. -
Boston Massacre
British troops were harassed and intimidated becasue of their efforts to enforce the Townshed Acts, causing clashes between the soldiers and citizens. Three peopld died immidiately and two died later because of their wounds. -
Boston Tea Party
A group led by Sameul Adams called the Sons fo Liberty snuck out at midnight and dumped tea. The Coercive Acts of 1774 were intended to punish the colony in general, but mostly Boston in particular. -

First Continental Congress
The First Continental Congress was made up of delegates elected by their colonies to try to show a combined authority to Great Britain. The major personalities involved were Peyton Randolph as president of Congress. The delegates were Patrick Henry, George Washington, John Adams, and John Jay. They drafted a declaration of rights and grievances. The meeting took place at Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia -

The Declaration of Independence is the document that the 13 colonies freedom from Great Britian. It was mainly written by Thomas Jefferson in Philadelphia. -

It was the agreement that established the United States as a confederation of states and it had served as our first constitution. The first President under these articles was John Hanson. -

It ended the American Revolutionary War. John Jay represented the United States in the signing. The United States gained the territory between the Allegheny Mountains on the east and the Mississippi River on the west. The British finally recognized the document of the Second Treaty of Paris. -

At the Annapolis Convention they wanted ot render the Constitution of Federal Government adequate to exigencies of Union. They wanted to tweak trade agreements. -

Lexington and Concord
The Battles of Lexington and Concord kicked off the American Revolutionary War. The major generals were Colonel Smith, Major Pitcairre, and Lord Percy. Paul Revere and Wiliam Dawes rode to warn the village by sounding the alarm so colonial militiamen would begin mobilizing to intercept the Redcoat column. -
Albany Plan of Union
Benjamin Franklin suggested this plan while at a meeting of colonial representatives in Albany, New York. This plan was proposed to unite colonies under a national congress. The Albany plan was rejected, but it set the groundwork fo the Aritcles of Confederation. Franklin made cartoon called "Join or die". -
Stamp Act
The Stamp Act was a tax on all paper documents in the colonies. Everyone thought the act was unconstituional because they thought that only their own representative asssemblies could tax them. They then resorted to mob violence. -

Intolerable Acts
The Boston Tea Party is what caused the enactment of the Intolerable Acts. The four provisions of these acts were the Boston Port Act, the Massachusetts Government Act, the Administration of Justice Act, and the Quatering Act. -
