Lexington. According to many this battle was known as the "shot heard 'round the world" that signified the beginning of the Revolutionary War. The Battle of Concord in Massachusetts marked the start of the Revolutionary War. In the battle the patriot militia got a victory that "inspired the Americans to believe that it might be possible to secure independence, despite the powerful British military.” Colonel James Barrett was the leader of the American militia in the Battle of Concord. -
Second Continental Congress
(This painting depicts a scene of the Second Continental Congress, with the writers of the Declaration of Independence standing.)The Second Continental Congress met in Philadelphia and remained in session throughout the Revolutionary War. It met because many colonists were outraged due to the Coercive Acts, the Intolerable Acts, and other restrictive measures that were passed by Congress. At this meeting, the delegates discussed war and all of the things that they needed for war: an army; the lack of funding, ammunition, rations for the soldiers, and soldiers. This Congress also constructed a group to be the head of -

foreign relations. At the Congress most of the delegates did not want to break free of Britain's power over them. Many just wanted to settle the score between them and then become united again. Through this belief, the Congress sent an "olive branch" petition to appeal King George III asking for peace and declaring their loyalty to him. King George III refused to receive this petition and declared the colonies to be rebellious. A year later the Second Continental Congress wrote the -

Declaration of Indepence. John Hancock was the president of the Second Continental Congress. Initially Peyton Randolph was appointed as the president, but he was summoned back to Virginia to preside over the House of Burgesses. The Declaration of Independence
(This is a photograph of the Declaration of Independece as it was written.)In response to King George III's rallies against the rebellious colonies, the enlargment of Britain's army and navy, and being in the middle of a war, the Revolutionary War; the Continental Congress created the Declaration of Independence. It was mainly written by Thomas Jefferson with the help of John Adams, Robert R. Livingston, and Benjamin Franklin. The Articles of Confederation
(I used this site to obtain an overview to what the Articles of Confederation were)The Continental Congress adopted the Articles of Confederation on November 15, 1777, but the ratification of it by all thirteen states did not occur until March 1, 1781. "The Articles created a loose confederation of sovereign states and a weak central government, leaving most of the power with the state governments." There was an apparent need for a stronger Federal government which led to Constitutional Convention in 1787. -
The Articles of Confederation
(At this site, this is where I found some of the successes and some of the failures of the Articles.)It was written by John Dickinson of Pennyslyvania. The first president who would be under the Articles would be John Hanson (1782). Some successes of the Articles were that "Congress was given jurisdiction over foreign relations with the authority to make treaties and alliances; Congress could make war and peace, maintain -

Some failures of the Articles were that the new Congress could not levy taxes, Congress could not regulate commerce ("revenue would come from the states, each contributing according to the value of privately owned land within its borders"), and in order to amend the Articles, the -

The Treaty of Paris (1783)
(This is a painting of the signing of the Treaty of Paris (1783). I believe that the man standing in the background (way back) is Benjamin Franklin.)It ended the Revolutionary War that was primarily being fought between Britain and the United States of America. John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, John Jay, and Henry Laurens were all representatives from the United States who took part in signing it. Through the Treaty of Paris, the new boundaries of the United States would be the boundaries of 1763 extending west to the Mississippi River (between the Atlantic Ocean on the east to the Mississippi River on the west, and from the 49th parallel and -

resolution that called for "the convening of a special convention to amend the weak Articles of Confederation for a number of serious defects." The convention unanimously adopted this resolution, but their authority was limited due to the lack of delegates. This convention ultimately led to a similar convention in July 1787 known as the Constitutional Convention which decided on a new form of government based around a new constitution, which would be the U.S. Constitution. -
Start of Constitutional Convention
(This site is where I found most of my information on the Annapolis Convention/ The start of the Constitutional Convention)
The Annapolis Convention was held to discuss some issues of interstate trade. Only 12 delegates total came to this convention, representing just five states (New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Virginia). Alexander Hamilton, on September 14, introduced a
